Don't Wanta Be a Blog Hog.....

....but I have a lot to ask of you.

First, for those of you who have been interested in my niece's progress since she moved in with me; I'm happy to report that she bought her first car today. It is a '96 Dodge Avenger, looks pretty good and she is as proud of it as she can be. She went straight from the car lot, got full coverage insurance; then to the car wash and cleaned it up really good; next to an automotive parts shop to get new seat covers. Tomorrow she is taking it for an oil change and tune up. She has worked hard and saved almost every penny she has made to be able to do this. I am very proud of her and the progress she is making.

Thursday I will start a yard sale as my first fund raising event to establish a home for young adults like Monica and her siblings who have grown up in homes where all they have known is abuse and neglect. In that one family are four who have no idea how to face real life; such as budgeting, good work ethics, how to apply for a good job, the importance of more education or training for a better life, etc, etc, etc. Then multiply that by thousands of American who have grown up without the benefit of parents who know or care how to give their a hope and a future. I know I can't make a difference in all their lives but I CAN make a difference in some. There are services for those ages who are alcoholics, drug addicts, sex addicts, delinquints, etc. But I haven't found any such services for the average who has reached the age of 18, never been in any serious trouble, but doesn't have a clue what to do next.

If there are any in SFF who have done something like this, or know of any services similar to what I have described please contact me. I can use all the advise you can give.

One thing that is key to the success of this endeavor is to find a way to financially support it. I don't want to be another "non-profit" with my hand out looking for other people to give. I want to find a small business idea that can be used to train these young people to support themselves. Again, any advise you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Monica is thriving with encouragement, advise and a minimum of help. All I have supplied her is a place to stay, and decent meals. Everything else she has done for herself. Her self esteem is blossoming and her goals are being realized one at a time. Now that she has the car she has the freedom to go to school and get the computer classes she is interested in. If she can do this, other young adults can do it. That is my goal, to show them the way.

That sounds wonderful, Joy. I wish the best for Monica, and send blessings to both of you. May your idea of helping these young people be a great success.

Joy

What you are trying to get established is wonderful. It takes a lot of work and patience to get it off the ground. But I am sure it will not only be greatly appreciated by those wanting to better themselves.

Because of me working in a homeless shelter, although I realize it is not exactly the same, but our goals is similar, I will suggest that you make use of the Churches in your area. not only for monetary reasons. Some not having enough to help out. But also for teaching resources. There are several people out there who are either retired, or just plain like to help that would be willing to help teach them the skills necessary to survive. Like budgeting, getting jobs, taking care of their family. So on and so forth. And usually all you have to do is ask. Just don't give up when one can't help. Because there are several that can and will.

Hope this does you some good.

Dusty, Your input is very helpful and I appreciate you taking time to write. Yes, it will take a lot of work and help from people more knowledgable than myself to make it successful. As I have said it is very important that we not go looking for hand outs, but find a way to earn the money to make it work. Unfortunately, many people who have grown up in abusive and negligent situations have come to think that the world owes them a living. I want to help them break that cycle of thinking and take pride in their own abilities to earn and accomplish.

GREAT news Linda.....she is blessed to have you in her life.....I did help start a consignment store once and those needing help could work there to earn clothing items and money....they helped with all aspects of running the store. Since it was consignment there was no cost to purchase stock and many in the area donated items without asking for any of the money....you also can apply for grants to assist in start up funds and some area organizations may donate the location. We also took in donations of formal dresses and donated them for local girls to be able to attend the proms. Our youth is such an imporant resource of tomorrow...we must help them learn to help themself....to a better life.
Good luck to you and I have no doubt you will be a success in whatever area you help these young people...their lives will forever be enhanced by your efforts.Bless you..HUGS..RED
