CAN YOU GO BACK HOME AGAIN?

i was thinking about this the other day, after Justin Trudeau became Canada's next Prime Minister. He is going back to the same house on 24 Sussex Drive that he lived in when his dad Pierre Elliott Trudeau was Prime Minister. How will he feel being there again? I remember when I lived in Montreal and moved from one area of town to another. I went back to my former area years later and it felt strange and yet familiar. Have you ever gone back to where you were raised? How was the experience? Are you glad you went?

By the way, I know I haven't been here much lately but it seems that I've had a comment (Pat's blog) disappear and my face isn't showing on my comments to anyone. I wrote customer service about that so it might be back up shortly. I don't see my blog on the blog's list either. I may have been inactive but I haven't disappeared, have i?

Have a wonderful weekend!!!

Elaine, I don't think we can compare out lives as youngsters to Trudeau's life. Totally different, as I'm sure you are well aware.

BTW 24 Sussex is due for a major makeover... Much needed repair etc. So he may be living at Harrington Lake in the meantime.

Hi Elaine, good to see you. We have lived in three different houses since we married. If and when we are in the area we always check out our old homes, just for old times sake. My father and brother are living in my childhood home, so I often pay a visit there.

How is your Mother doing?

I haven't been to my old home town in middle Illinois for quite a few years, at least 10. I would like to take a trip there and show Alfie where I grew up.

When we were in England 3 years ago Alfie took me where he lived growing up and showed me all the areas around it.

By the way, I have wondered where you were......

I visit my grandparents farm house every so often when I am in the area. Would love to walk through it as I often dream of it but so far haven't been able to do so.

I posted a blog about this very subject not too long ago. The house I grew up in is pretty much the same as when I lived there. They updated it with modern day plumbing but the upstairs of the house is still the same as when I lived there. They haven't added unto the house but updated it with new siding. To me it is still my childhood home and I will always remember it for that.

Hi there Elaine,

Good to see you here again, my friend!

I sold my home a year ago and was invited over this summer by the new owners for a bbq. The gardens/yard and inside are completely different. I recognized the 'bones' but they have made the house theirs. The house with a big family in it, never knew what hit it....LOLOL.

It was great fun!!! My memories are the best.

Yes his life is atypical but the question remains. Can we go home again? I read about the renovations after the post. I have to admit that I don't think it's right that there are $10 million in taxpayers' money going to renovate 24 Sussex Drive. How about a $2 million new building instead? Thanks for your comment. salsa.

Nice to see you too, Pat. It's too bad about Joe's former home being torn down. That is sad. It's funny but I feel nostalgic not sad, when I used to drive by the area I lived in.

Good to see you too, Maura. That's interesting that you still have family living in your childhood home. You can always relive old memories if you want to.

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question about my mom. She's finished her radiation and she's feeling fine. Thanks so much for asking.

Thanks for your comment, Ann. It's great that Alfie got to show you around the area where he grew up. I like seeing where my boyfriend lived. I hope you get to see your childhood home some day soon. I haven't seen mine in way over a decade.

I've looked at comments here a bit but I think my life has been torn in many directions. I will try to check in here more often.

Elaine, sorry, I meant to respond to the main part of your question. As you're aware, I am also from Montreal but I moved away from there when I went over to France with NATO in the late 60s. But I do think I would have eventually left there, like one of my relatives during the referendum days. I still have family there so I visit occasionally but no, for many reasons (both political and other), I would not move back. I enjoy my visits there, not just simply to visit family but also for a bit of nostalgia!

Thanks Spirit. Why don't you ask the people who live there now if they'd let you walk through it?

Thanks for responding, Shartaun03. If I read your blog concerning this topic, I'm sorry i don't remember it. Perhaps it was while I've been inactive here. It's nice that you have such fond memories of the house where you grew up.

Kind of off topic, but I wanted to comment of 24 Sussex.

You're right that building a brand new residence from the bottom up would be much less expensive. Unfortunately, some believe and want to continue with 'tradition'... sighhhh.

As most here know, renovating is full of surprises and always, on this scale, much more expensive. None of the repairs had been done as needed over the years and it's a major undertaking now.

Hi Elaine, nice to see you.
Some months ago, this year, I got homesick, thinking of my hometown. I wrote a blog about it. The last time I went, many years ago, the house we lived in was the same, at least outside. Some days ago, my goddaughter went to my hometown and I asked her to take a picture of it and some of my close neighbors. There are some small stores in the house we lived in, so it has no windows, just gates. Many memories came to my mind and I felt a bit sad...
