I've been a huge fan of Julia's since forever, having watched her and Jacques Pepins (another culinary giant) manufacture feasts unfit for any heart on their TV show.
"And we'll add some butter to these mushrooms for a rich flavor," Julia would chirp. Then she'd plop in a half-pound of that yellow gold into the pan while Jacques would shake his head: classic.
Meryl put on a marvelous performance in the 2009 flick "Julie & Julia." And who can forget SNL's take on her skills. Thanks for a reminder...
I'm going to go and fry something. ๐๐ท๐ท
Save the liver! (Thanks for the memory)
I'm going to have to get Julie and Julia - maybe after I'm finished with the HBO series. And wow, I remembered the bleeding in that sketch but didn't remember how over the top it was! ๐ God bless Dan Ackroyd.
@smartasswoman
There was an awful lot of red there. Bless those "review-people".
All of Julia's episodes, as well as those of Jacques, are on that tube of yous. I learned many tricks and tips from watching. Here's a breadcrumb from her first show.
Do you cook much? I've scaled back since the family has grown up and moved. It's not as much fun cooking for one.
... her recipes are almost impossible to replicate unless one has four hours to spare and staff to help with the clean-up...
@Paulxx001 I just watched the first few minutes just now, but appreciated the knife tutorial! Thanks for the YouTube tip, I'm going to have to check out a few.
I admit, I don't cook much. It just feels like so much effort for just me, and then there's leftovers for days (or freezing it, OR eating way too much of it if it happens to turn out quite well).
True, about knife tips. She always has one or two valuable tricks to share. On this one, she continually confuses the Vermouth with the olive oil, and she waits twenty-four minutes before spilling the brandy. What a hoot. ๐ฒ๐
She was an amazing woman. Even before she became the culinary maestro that she was, I found the time she was working for the government in what became the CIA of today says a lot about what she can do. The woman was inspiring!!
Isn't that back story amazing? I recently read about it. The early photos of her that her husband took are pretty cool.
@smartasswoman I know right?!! I remember watching her on TV when I was a kid, I didn't cook back then so I wasn't too into watching her on TV. Over the years, learning about what she did before she was a chef on TV, I found her way more interesting as a person.
I think the โcandleโ would be worthy of updating for the 2000s perhaps with a flashing LED to replace the cherry. I would be wary of the wooden tooth pick holding it all together though.
As for pineapple slices they were the height of sophistication in the 50-60โs โฆ. add one or two to a slice of ham and you were in the realms of proper โcordon bleuโ cooking
Or better yet...top your Spam with it. My mom used to make a faux ham out of Spam by sticking cloves in it and glazing it. We weren't poor! I'm not sure why she bought that stuff.
@smartasswoman Oh gawd โฆ sadly I remember Spam fritters โฆ. I think my dad banned Spam from the house after a while as he practically lived on the stuff during WWII โฆ I remember him recounting how after being stored in a tank in the N African desert heat it would turn to liquid โฆ. yummy
@OldSaltySeaman Ive very recently read that Spam is cooked in that can. Amaaaazing ~
This comment is just to prove I'm back.
And Sarah Lancashire is a brilliant actress.
A big welcome back to the Spunkster!
Might have been a reason for the pineapple as opposed to Honeycrisp.
Good point, isn't it supposed to improve the flavor of certain things?
@smartasswoman One only has hearsay to go on.
Dosent everyone like and desire a cherry ๐ on top
A man would love to watch you eat the candle salad
I love Julia! Have you seen Julie and Julia? Or maybe its Julia and Julie. It's cute and shows her marital relationship as sweet and tender.
I've been seeing your bread crumbs
The bread crumbs are obvious to someone who already knows the way there, haha! Not sure if anyone else will pick up on it, but at least I tried.
That candle is definitely not a fire hazard.
This is true. And you can eat it! ๐
That was SUCH a good series, I just loved watching it! I enjoyed the character of Alice in there as well, even though she wasn't a "true" part of the story.
I had wondered if a young black female producer was a real part of the story (and suspected it was not). I agree, it was a good addition.
Did you ever see Julie and Julia with Meryl Streep?
I did not, but it's on my list now. Meryl Streep is so wonderful, I can only imagine how great her take on Julia would be.
@smartasswoman Best part of the movie for me, really. As you say, she's amazing in basically everything.
I would be surprised if anyone actually connected the dots, but at least I tried!
You know - I'm not sure if I've ever actually seen her PBS show. I'll have to look and see if any are available on my PBS streaming app.
12??!! Holy crap, check the crossdresser stores! ๐
Suuurrreee, that looks like a candle, and not a c***.
Hey now. ๐
