My Mother and I had a troubled relationship for a number of years. She was born premature with a hearing disability. I inherited that disability. She had some major league anger control problems. She was in and out of the Bobbie hatch. There was a lot of battering and physical abuse that went on in my childhood. I remember going to church and asking God for help. That help never came or maybe it was God's help that gave me the strength to survive a difficult childhood.
The way I functioned as a was to raid the family liquor supply and get as drunk as possible. By the time the Holidays came, the vodka was watered down. When booze was not available, I drank Listerine. Later on, I discovered that Valium and Vodka mixed together quite nicely. I was a teenage closet alcoholic.
I actually made it on the honor roll in High School, I graduated and moved to Hollywood. That was major league trouble. I was naive to the point of stupidity. Finally, I decided to try Beauty School. A fellow student in the school joined A.A. and asked me to go to meetings with her. She didn't want to face those scary old drunks all by herself. I carefuly listened in the meetings and concluded that I was a drunk. I didn't go as far down like some of the other members but the handwriting was written on the wall. The A.A. members let me stay. There were two relapses but I've been there since. I was 21 years old. I reached the legal drinking age and decided to quit.
One of the first things I had to deal with sober was my anger with Mother. I later realized that she was sick like I was. I got the 12 Steps and an opportunity to get well- She got the Bobbie Hatch, Shock Treatments and the Thorazine Trudge. We both grew up with feelings of isolation because of hearing disabilities. I got digital hearing aids. She never wore hearing aids until she got older when I told her she need them. She stayed in isolation. I was able to reach out with the help of the 12 Step Community.
Mother would often ask me when I was going to get married and settle down. My first marriage in my thirties was the most unsettling experience I ever went through. In 1994, I decided to give marriage a second try. The Wedding was to take place at a Nudist Resort. I sent my mother a plane ticket to California. I purchased bus passes for her and my boys. When I was at work, my boys took her to the beach everyday. My father used to fish off of the Pier off of the Ventura Beach.
When I was off work for the Weekend, my soon to be hubby and I took her to the Clothing Optional Beach near Carpenteria. My grandmother told my mother over the phone that she was "being bad!" Later that evening, we went to a male strip show. I waved bills over my Mother's head so that that dancers would give her a special show. I still remember my Mother putting money in a man's g-string with her teeth. We had pictures especially for my grandmother's benefit.
I took her to a Psychic Faire in Ojai. One reader could tell that I also know how to read cards. Another reader worked with Guardian Angels. She was so right on target with the challenges in Mother's Life and gave her the name of her Guardian Angel. That meant so much to my Mother.
The next week, I had off at work. We drove to the Tree House Nudist Resort for the Wedding. That was my second marriage. My mother wore a Tree house Nudist Resort Tee-Shirt for the Bowling League when She got back to Arkansas. My grandmother fumed.
A few years later, my Mother and Grandmother moved to Las Vegas with my Brothers. My grandmother was diagnosed with Cancer and died a few weeks later. Mother did her usually Boobie Hatch trip. She always did that when somebody died. A few month later, she was released from the Boobie Hatch. The next week she collapsed and into the SpiritWorld she went.
She did not have an easy life at all. I sincerely pray that the next one will be better.

Darrell Martinie the Cosmic Muffin Professional Astrologer and Famed Radio Talk Personality died in his home after a a three year battle with cancer on Wednesday, July 26, 2006..
One of the major challenges that Astrologers deal with is explaining Cosmic happenings in a way that the general public can understand while keeping it interesting for Astrologers.
The Cosmic Muffin successfully operated outside of the box in his own personal life and in the Astrological Community as well.
His radio talk shows moved outside of the easier softer way of focusing on “sun sign” astrology and reach out, focusing on aspects and angles which affect everyone both in the business and personal aspects of their lives. These shows are remembered by many for the tag line, “It is a wise person who rules the stars, a fool who is ruled by them, over and out. In 1993, William Weld, the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and a “Muffin” fan for many years, proclaimed Darrell Martinie, The Cosmic Muffin, official astrologer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, a fact which is also an answer in the millennium edition of Trivial Pursuit.
On May 17th 2004, Mr. Martinie and his life partner of 33 years, Edward Boesel, were the first same sex couple to obtain a marriage license in their town of Saugus, which marriage was officiated by Oedipus (the program director for WBCN) on May 28th at the World Trade Center in Boston.
His contribution to the Astrological Community is his legacy.

White Shirt dyed in Tea and My Father's Early Demise!

August gets me to thinking about my parents both Leos who are now in the SpiritWorld. Growing up with two Leo parents may be the reason I went deaf.
My father was a Korean and Vietnam War Veteran. He was hurt in a Hotel Bombing in Saigon and that was the end of his military career. For the rest of his life he continued to watch military television shows like Combat, Hogan's Heroes and the Green Berets. My Mother was a major league nag - and that is a mild deception of what she was. I sometime wonder if that is why he VOLUNTEERED for Vietnam. He left her in the States with five . Sometimes, I speculate that her nagging lead him into an early grave.
He was at the Veteran's Hospital - told the Nurse that he was take a shower before watching another Military Television Show. He collapse in the shower and into the spirit world he went.
Mother wanted him to be buried in his old Uniform but wondered how the Mortician would fit it on him. She was assured that they would make it fit. I didn't have the heart to tell her that they would cut the back and fit it around him. He needed a brown shirt for the Uniform. I dyed a white shirt in tea to make it brown. Not quite up to Military standards but the creator won't object.
We placed a box of cigars with a lighter in the coffin. I placed a gold cross in his hand and noticed that he was not wearing any pants. I visualized him meeting his maker with no pants but at least he could light his cigar.
My mother had a habit of making a big scene and having a nervous break-down whenever somebody died. My father's death obviously no exception. It was more painful dealing with my Mother's pain than it was my father's death. I was not able to cry until three months later.

My Mother's Wake and Never Book A Flight on a Full Moon

In July, my mother died suddenly and unexpectedly. She died in Las Vegas. There was a grave site waiting for my mother next to my father who is buried in California. The Burial Insurance had lapsed.
My sister and I pondered on how we were going to get Mother to California and transport ourselves to California as well. "We are not," I told my sister. We agreed to split the cost of cremation. Mother would have been rolling around in her ashes if she knew what we were doing.
"We are not taking her to California," my sister advised us. We'll scatter her ashes along a river in Arkansas. "Isn't that against the Catholic Rules," my youngest brother asked. "I think we can do it as long as she stays in a container, I answered my brother. He suggested that we bury her remains in his wife's family graveyard. A fence post digger should adequately do the job. Legally there the hole had to be at least three feet. Thus the arrangements were made.
My oldest brother picked the ashes and was advised to turn them over to the funeral director. He said there would be no funeral director. "Down South, they don't need no funeral director!" an elderly man listening in commented.
My younger was in California for the summer with his father. My older lived in California at the time. My boys collected dirt from my father's grave site. I booked a flight for my oldest to travel to West Virginia with the youngest . I should know better than to book a flight on a full moon. There was a security breech which caused a big mess at the Chicago Airport! My boys were stranded in Chicago! I was hysterical as I was talking to the airline. Is that plane going to wait for my boys. Nope! Eventually, I did talk to my sons. The Airport put them up at the Chicago Hilton. They thought it was cool.
They were a day late, but we still made it in time after 16 hour drive in time for Mother's Wake. Friar Tuck wasn't there. I did a Pagan Style Ceremony for my Southern Baptist Siblings. I explained the Medicine Wheel, the Red Road/Earth Walk and finally the Blue Road/Spirit World. I gave everyone some dirt from my Father's Grave. We added the dirt to her grave and each shared our relationship and a short story about Mother - We placed her remains in the three foot hole. I placed some crystals and rosary beads in there. My younger brother placed a can of coke in there for Mother. We did an energy circle and released my Mother's Spirit.
It may not have been the ceremony that she wanted but we did the best we could with what we had to work with and it turned out all right after all.

Eight Below - A Mushy Film for Lovers - Husky or Otherwse

This movie is based on a true event in 1957, where an expedition in the Antarctica goes bad. The research team have to evacuate and leave behind Six Huskies and Two Malamutes who are forced to fend for themselves for over six months in the Antarctic Winter.
If you can imagine the look your gives you - when you leave him in the comfort of his own home. Visualize looking in the eyes of Maya, Max, Shorty, Dewey, Truman, Shadow, Buck and Old Jack who just saved your live while you leave them chained up in a storm. –
In the 1957 event - there were fifteen dogs and two survived. 
In the movie there were Eight Dogs and Six Survived. 
The Movie is filmed in bright daylight at a time Antarctica is locked in round-the-clock darkness during the Winter Months. 
Nevertheless, a Walt Disney Movie can’t have too much darkness and doom. They would have never been able to film the beautiful scenery with the Gorgeous Pooches in the dark. The movie was actully filmed in Canada which is closer to the North Pole than the South Pole.
Hollywood is entitled to take a few creative liberties in the quest for entertainment. One of the dogs came from a puppy mill while another one came from the pound. Now they are Stars! 
In the movie, a survivalist guide is ordered to take a geologist who is looking for a meteorite from Mercury through dangerous grounds with his team of sled dogs. The Scientist has a near mishap and the dogs bail him out. He has another accident because of Self-Will-Run-Riot and is rescued by Maya the Alpha Female in the pack.
It is Maya's leadership and the dogs working together keep the men alive, as the dogs drag their sled and its two–now unconscious–occupants back to base. The expedition team is forced to evacuate because of the storm of the century but there no room to bring the dogs. They are chained up and left to weather the storm. They are unable to come back for the dogs because of the storm.
The rest of the story is about how the animals eventually break loose from the chains and help each other survive and how their master desperately searches for a way to return to his beloved companions. The story has a happy ending when he is finally able to return and discover that six of the dogs survived.
This is the ideal feel good mushy movie for those of us who are people. 
I wonder how Ferlin the Husky Hound Mutt would fare in the wilderness. I usually have to keep him out of trouble rather than the other way around. I did get lost in the woods once and I suspect Ferlin could have found his way out quicker than I did.

The play is where the term "a pound of flesh"
comes from.
The play starts with two friend Antonio, a Christian merchant, and his aristocrat friend Bassanio, an who has lost all of his money, comes and asks Antonio to for a loan.
Antonio, who has tied up all of his money is seafaring ventures, is unable to give Bassanio a direct loan. Instead he offers to use his good credit to get a loan for Bassanio.
Bassanio gets the loan from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, as long as Antonio promises him a pound of his flesh as collateral. Antonio, thinking this is a "merry sport," accepts the condition of the bond (contract) and signs it.
The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.

Bassanio uses the money to court Portia, a wealthy heiress. She is unmarried because her father has decreed that all suitors must first select one of three caskets in order to marry her. The caskets, one made of gold, one of silver, and one of base lead, all contain different messages. Only one of these caskets contains a picture of Portia. The suitor who picks that casket will be granted permission to marry her.
The Prince of Morocco chose the Gold Casket. among the caskets hence the term, "All that glitters is not Gold. The next suitor, the Prince of Aragon, selects the silver casket which bears an inscription stating that it will give a man what he deserves. Inside is a picture of an idiot, indicating that his self-centered approach was foolish.
All that glisters is not gold.

Back in Venice, Jessica, the of Shylock, has fallen in love with Lorenzo. Jessica takes some of her father's money and they run off together to elope.
Shylock, upon discovering that his has run away with his money, blames Antonio for helping her escape. At the same time there are rumors developing in Venice that many of Antonio's ships, with which he expected to repay Shylock for the loan, have sunk or been lost at sea. Shylock literally wants a pound of Antonio's flesh.
I will buy with you, sell with you, talk with you, walk with you, and so following; but I will not eat with you, drink with you, nor pray with you. What news on the Rialto?

Bassanio arrives in Belmont, choses the lead casket with the portrait of Portia and wins her hand in marriage. She gives him a ring to seal their engagement and they prepare to get married the next day. Graziano, who has accompanied Bassanio to Belmont, tells him that he and Nerissa (Portia's friend) wish to be married as well.
Bassanio recieves a letter from Antonio in which he informs Bassanio that he has lost all his money and must forfeit a pound of flesh to Shylock. Bassanio immediately tells Portia what has happened. She orders him to take six thousand ducats and return to Venice where he can pay Shylock and cancel the contract.
If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?

After Bassanio and Graziano have left, Nerissa and Portia depart for Venice disguised as men.

Shylock has Antonio arrested and brought before the Duke of Venice, who presides over a court of justice. The Duke pleads with Shylock to forgive the contract and let Antonio go free. When he refuses, the Duke asks him how he expects any mercy if he is unable to offer it. The Duke then tells the gathered men that he is waiting for a doctor of the law to arrive.
A pound of flesh, to be by him cut off

Nerissa enters the court and hands a letter to the Duke which notifies him that a Doctor Bellario has sent an educated young doctor in his place. Portia arrives disguised as the Doctor Balthasar. She informs the Duke that she has studied the case and will preside over it. She first asks Shylock for the contract and looks it over. Bassanio offers to pay Shylock the six thousand ducats, but he refuses to accept the money, preferring instead the revenge of killing Antonio.

Portia grants Shylock his pound of flesh. Shylock, overjoyed at winning his case, holds a knife ready to cut into Antonio's breast.
Portia stops him by asking if he has a surgeon present to suppress the flow of blood. Shylock tells her that the bond said nothing about providing a doctor. She informs him that he may have his pound of flesh, but that if he sheds a single drop of blood then Venice can take away his lands and wealth according to the law.
Shylock, clearly unable to comply with this law, asks instead that he be given the six thousand ducats. Portia refuses his request, explaining that she has already ruled according to the contract, and that it must be carried out.
Portia then starts to read the contract literally, reaffirming that Shylock must take exactly one pound of flesh, no more and no less, or he will violate the contract and die. Shylock tells the court that he wishes to completely drop his case and forgive Antonio the entire three thousand ducats.
How far that little candle throws his beams!
So shines a good deed in a naughty world.

Portia again refuses his request, explaining that the law in Venice states that if any foreigner conspires against the life of a Venetian, half his wealth is to be given to the man against whom he conspired, and half is taken as a fine by the state. In addition, the Duke is granted the power of life and death over him.
When Shylock is pardoned by the Duke, he informs the court that he would prefer death rather than lose everything he owns. Antonio asks the court to return the fine of half of Shylock's wealth provided Shylock converts to Christianity.
These blessed candles of the night.

In addition, Antonio declares he will keep his share in a trust for Jessica and Lorenzo. Portia agrees to this, and also makes Shylock promise to give all his money to Lorenzo upon his death.
After the trial Bassanio thanks "Dr. Balthasar" (Portia) for "his" good work and offers "him" anything "he" desires. Portia asks him for the ring she had given him earlier as a token of their love. He is upset about giving it to her since he thinks she is "Balthasar." However, after Antonio points out that he nearly lost his life for Bassanio, Bassanio pulls off the ring and hands it to her.
Portia and Nerissa return to Belmont as themselves. Lorenzo and Jessica have been living there Soon after the two women arrive, Bassanio and Graziano also return from Venice. The happy reunion is destroyed when Portia asks Bassanio about the ring (which he gave away). She forgives him only after Antonio vouches for Bassanio's fidelity.
Portia then gives Antonio the ring and has him hand it to Bassanio. He is shocked to see it is the same ring he gave "Balthasar". Portia finally tells him the truth about Balthasar. The play ends with three happy couples: namely Lorenzo and Jessica, Nerissa and Graziano, as well as Portia and Bassanio.
