A Strange Thing Happened On My Birthday

It was my birthday days ago and as usual, I checked my e-mail. I noticed a message from my old boyfriend. We dated 7 years decades ago. We corresponded briefly years ago but nothing since then. Imagine my shock seeing his name appear. I then read the message. He asked how I was, where I was and if I was busy. Then he proceeded to say he had a favor to ask me. He signed it with his full name.
I was suspicious. Why would my ex boyfriend be asking for a favor? Why would my ex boyfriend who I had shared intimate times with, end the message with his full name? Why did he not even put my name on the message in his salutation? Red flags popped up all over the place.
I responded to his message, which was not at the e-mail address I used for him years ago. I asked what the favor was and for the name of his parents. I admitted it shocked me to hear from him and to be asked a favor when he has a wife, brothers, etc.
He responded that he was traveling and wanted to buy a Google gift card for his niece, who shared the same birthday. He wanted $200 in $100 denominations. He asked me to scratch it and give him the PIN number and to take a pic of it. He said he would pay me back once back in town. I wasn't born yesterday, as I turned 61 lol. NO WAY would my ex boyfriend ask this of me. I said to him that I am busy due to my birthday and that he should ask his brothers or wife. I asked for his parents' name again. He responded that his account had been hacked and to ignore the whole thing.
I then thought to myself that it is the hacker saying about the hacking. I wrote the e-mail address of my ex boyfriend and he responded saying others were upset about all this and he is trying to catch the guy. He said something that made me know it's him not that I had doubts.
Anyhow besides being beware of anyone bearing gifts, beware of anyone asking for gifts. 
I missed all of you, well almost all. 
Anyone else have such a thing happen to them?

I just read someone's blog was se*xual in nature. I am going to post this joke I received, hoping it too will pass SFF censors. Here goes:
A Greek and an Italian were talking one day, discussing who had the superior culture.
Over coffee, the Greek says "Well, we built the Parthenon."
The Italian replies "We built the Coliseum."
The Greek retorts "We Greeks gave birth to mathematics."
The Italian, nodding, says "But we built the Roman Empire."
And so on and so on until the Greek comes up with what he thinks will end the discussion.
With a flourish of finality he says "We invented sex!"
The Italian replies " is true, but it was the Italians who included women.

I am thankful to be living in a civilized country. According to BBC News there are new laws in Brunei:
" the new laws, individuals accused of certain acts will be convicted if they confess or if there were witnesses present.
Offences such as r*a*p*e, adultery, so*domy, robbery and insult or defamation of the Prophet Muhammad will carry the maximum penalty of death.
Lesbian sex carries a different penalty of 40 strokes of the cane and/or a maximum of years in jail
The punishment for theft is amputation
Those who "persuade, tell or encourage" Muslim the age of 18 "to accept the teachings of religions other than Islam" are liable to a fine or jail
Individuals who have not reached puberty but are convicted of certain offences may be instead subjected to whipping."
I can't imagine living in a country where such punishments are accepted. They are barbaric. I am grateful to live in Canada where such things would not be condoned.

My Mother’s Gift

My brother gave our mother an interesting birthday gift. It was one of those ancestry DNA tests. There were some surprises since we thought we knew exactly where her family was from. It wasn’t that far off but it was interesting. What was most exciting was finding relatives we never knew we had. It’s been great. One cousin wrote us and 2 I wrote. We are still trying to piece everything together but there have been exchanges of pictures and everyone has been fantastic. In fact, it turns out 1 cousin lived in Montreal 20 years while we were there. We didn’t know the other existed. We spoke on the phone with 2 cousins. The third lives in Australia so we corresponded by e-mails. Two are doing family searches that they will share with us once completed. I find the whole thing fascinating.
What are your experiences, if any, with these services?

DANGERS OF WASHING RAW CHICKEN

I was going to post about Roseanne Barr but it seems everyone beat me to the punch. I instead made a comment on someone else's great post (Star's). It definitely did intrigue me regarding the aftermath. It seems that when an actor takes a job, he/she better make sure the other actors in the production are all non controversial or they could end up kissing their residuals goodbye.
I read something today that I wanted to discuss because it's important. To wash raw chicken or not wash it, that is the question. Seems Julia said to wash them but her co-star disagreed. It seems to be a hot topic and one with potentially dangerous consequences if the wrong choice is made. There is a risk of cross contamination. Raw chicken has some deadly forms of bacteria. Salmonella is the one that most heard about but isn't the only one. When you wash raw chicken, it could get on other things and that can be deadly. I read something about soaking it in water instead and then putting it in the refrigerator for up to 2 hours. That may be the best bet but I am not sure.
Do you wash your raw chicken before cooking it?

BARRY AND HONEY SHERMAN

I can't speak of what is known internationally but here in Ontario the big news last week was the bodies of Barry and Honey Sherman were found hung by their pool. Barry Sherman owned Apotex the largest producer of generic drugs in Canada. I never really thought about it before but, I have insurance but still pay a portion. When there is no generic equivalent, my portion is still high. Thanks to Mr. Sherman whose company produces some of my pills, I have saved money. Countless of others have as well.
Now this is where things are different. Unlike some billionaires, the Shermans didn't live as high off the hog as most. They flew coach and Barry drove a beat up old car for many years. What they did most was donate generously their money AND time to causes. They gave tens of millions of dollars to charitable causes and Honey especially devoted her time and energy to causes she believed in. They were really good giving people.
I feel sick that such wonderful and generous people would be taken away from their 4 in such a violent way and hope they find the culprit(s). I watched their funeral and I cried a lot. I can only imagine what their are going through. One thing is sure, they left a great legacy and their generosity will always be remembered through the many they touched. RIP Barry and Honey Sherman.

This is either the best place or the worst place to bring this up. Age is just a number, at least that's what the young guys that hit on me always say. I always answer yes but mine is a larger number than theirs. Well 50 hit me hard and now that I turned 59 and being so close to 60 bothers me in some ways. How did you take reaching a new decade?
