1. This wild orchid is bigger and more colourful than the previous one.
2. Unlike the previous one, this orchid grows in the soil and do not need a host.
3. Some people have planted these orchids in their gardens.
4. They are white with a purple lip.
5. The orchid used to be found in abundance in the wild – on hill slopes, ex-mining land, by the sides of lakes, etc.
6. They are hardy and can survive on poor/sandy soil. It seems that they only need sunlight to flourish.
7. Although they are considered wild, I find them quite beautiful. Moreover, they bloom throughout the year unlike other orchids whereby you may have to wait for months or years for them to bloom.
8. However, the survival of these orchids is now being threatened. They are slowly being replaced by these man-made structures.

Foto Friday - Flowers

1. This is a blooming Tecoma at Aulong New Village, Taiping. I was attracted by its unique shape.
2. I captured this at the food court outside the jetty at Changi Village, Singapore. I was there in the morning to taste its famous Nasi Lemak when I spotted what looked like a white Christmas tree!
3. According to search, this is also a Tecoma tree although the flower clusters are different.. I shot this at the Taiping Lake Garden.
4. This is a lily pond at the Taiping Lake Garden. This is the first time there so many blooms. Previously there were only about two or three blooms.

Foto Friday - Glimpses of Singapore.

From the top:-
1. The view outside my window. The government has built a lot of these affordable high-rise buildings for its citizens in land-scarce Singapore.
2. A busy city street. Note the large amount of trees lining the road.
3. Inside Bugis Junction – one of the many shopping malls.
4. An old street with skyscrapers in the background.
5. The bazaar opposite Bugis Junction – reputed to be the largest.
6. Inside the bazaar.
7. A stall selling Nyonya kueh (bite-size snacks which are very popular here).
8. A fruit stall – in the forefront, the white fruits are peeled rambutans and the yellow fruits are nangka (a type of jackfruit).

Foto Friday - Punggol Park

These are some photographs I took at Punggol Park in Singapore where I like to go for my walks. Apart from the Morning Glory, Bougainvillea and the Bulrush, I do not know the other plants. Maybe some of you can help.

Recently I tried a new form of poetry known as cinquain.
Well, you know what they say: one should never stop learning. 
In the dark
Listen ……..
with little puffs
like a departing train,
the wind chases away the moon
tonight.
Softly ………
like wisps of mist
lingering in the hills
memories of you inundate
my mind
and touch me affectionately
like you did in those days
so long ago;
I weep.
Bygones!
Bygones should remain as bygones,
but the heavy silence
allows them in ………
till dawn.

Foto Friday - Hazy Morning

This picture was taken about a week ago at a village called Aulong located at the outskirts of Taiping. We were heading there for breakfast and to do a little marketing. Every year during the hot and dry season, the farmers in Sumatra set fire to the jungles there so that they can plant their crops after that. Unfortunately, the smoke from these fires is blown over to our country.

From top:-
1. Areca nut also known as betel nut as it is often chewed wrapped in betel leaves. In Malaysia, it is known as Pinang. It is from this palm tree that the island of Penang got its name.
2. Coconut – This is the yellow variety. It only grows up to about 10 feet tall.
3. Foxtail palm tree with fruits.
4. The sap of the tiny fruits of this palm causes itchiness. This palm also grows to about 10 feet tall.
5. This palm tree is very tall. It can grow up to about 50 feet.
