The other day, I came across an interesting quotation from the Roman philosopher, Seneca. He lived in the Roman Empire at about the time of Christ. To me, the quote is quite compelling.

"Begin at once to live"

Over the past few years, I have been drawn to the practice of mindfulness. Particularly through the writings of the Buddhist monk, Tich Nat Han. I am surprised to see such a mindful message from the pre-Christan era. It seems that notion of the importance of being totally involved in this moment is an age old concept. I think that I can take a lesson here. Thanks for listening.

Well, the weather has cleared. A great day on the North Shore. And it is Labor Day. A day off from work. Again, my thanks to the many kind folks who have read my blog and offered their comments. Thank you.

Today, I was reading a recent post from MissMermaid about her spiritual relationship with the ocean. It got me to thinking about my own life. Ever since I can remember, I have been drawn to the ocean. Growing up as a , going to the beach. Playing in the surf for hours on end. Looking out from the shore to sea at night. The lights on the buoys and the lighthouses accentuating the darkness. Wondering what it would be like to go to sea. Well, I did go to sea. And now, many years later, looking back and reflecting, it was the best of times and the worst of times. Crossing the Pacific Ocean. It is a very big ocean. Days upon days. Standing watch. No ships in sight. The stars at night very beautiful. The North Atlantic in winter. Stormy. Huge waves. Just hanging on for dear life. The Caribbean. Always beautiful. Exotic. The dolphins ride the bow wave of the ship for hours on end. The Indian Ocean. Vast. Lonely. My sailing days are over but I still hear the call of those far away places with strange sounding names. And remember.

First, I would like to thank all of the kind people who responded to my first post. I think that I will stay awhile. Thank you.

Well, it is the Labor Day Weekend. Here in New England the weather is cloudy, with rain and that chill in the air that reminds me that the season is changing. Like the seasons, change is a part of life. I can understand that in a philosophical sense, but but change in my own life is harder to accept. For the past 20 years or so, I have raised two boys. Most of that time as a single parent. #1 is launched, kind of sort of. I am still a bit concerned about his flight path. #2 left for college last Sunday. I visited with him yesterday, briefly. Just to drop off some extra things and to take him into town to buy some needed supplies. He says, "Gee Dad, I think that I am adjusting to life at school here pretty well". I guess. The campus is beautiful. from all over the world and he and his new friends are off to Boston for the evening. Oh, the resiliency of youth. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, after all those years of single parenting, I am an "empty nester". I was speaking to a friend last night and was asked the question, "Well, what are you going to do now?". You know, I just don't know. My work keeps me pretty busy. The house and the yard still need work. I can clean the living room and go shopping. But, now the living stays clean. I no longer need tons of fruit and pots of pasta. It's just not the same. One benefit is that I can get on the computer. That never happened before. But there is something missing. I know that with this new season, there will still be an Indian Summer and the warmth of the hearth in the cold days ahead. I am, however, reminded of President Clinton's thoughts on his 60'th birthday, that there are more days in the past than that lie ahead. That is just the truth. I guess that the challenge is to make the most of those days. Thanks for listening.

Well, I finally did it. I have joined the senior set. I have been resistant. However, I am thinking that I have a lot more in common with folks on this web site than others. I am not really sure, but there seems to be a bit of a duality here. Browsing through some of the profiles and who is online, there seems to be a mix of people looking for different things. I am sure that that is to be expected. I hope that my blog will offer a forum for all to share. I am very much interested in hearing from local member on the North Shore and from all my new friends throughout the seven seas. Anchors away!
