These pictures were taken by Billy and I earlier this year. On a fine Summer's day the cathedral grounds are very popular with picnickers and buyers of fast food at nearby take away cafes.

The church itself straddles nearby Winetavern St and has an overpass from one side of the street to the other.

This text is C & P from Wikipedia

Christchurch Cathedral is It is officially claimed as the seat (cathedra) of both the Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic archbishops of Dublin. In practice it has been the cathedral of only the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin, since the Irish Reformation. Though nominally claimed as his cathedral, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin uses a church elsewhere, St Mary's in Malborough Street in Dublin, as his pro-cathedral (acting cathedral).[1]

Christ Church Cathedral is located in the former heart of mediaeval Dublin, next to Wood Quay, at the end of Dame Street (the latter owes its name to a Norman French title given to Our Lady). However a major dual carriage-way building scheme around it separated it from the original mediaeval street pattern which once surrounded it, with it original architectural context (at the centre of a maze of small buildings and streets) lost both by road-building and by the demolition of the older residential quarter at Wood Quay. As a result the cathedral now appears dominant in isolation behind new civil offices along the quays, out of its original mediaeval context.

Christchurch is the only one of the three cathedrals or acting cathedrals which can be seen clearly from the River Liffey.

Four months ago my niece Grace gave birth to twin boys, Max and Alex. On Sunday afternoon Grace visited with us and brought the little boys along.

The picture shows our Caroline feeding Max, left, and Grace feeding Alex.

Grace told us that the babies were named after Emperor Magnus Maximus and Alexander the Great, respectively. That'll give them plenty to live up to.

We went to the Phoenix Park on Sunday and the swans were looking for bread but once again we hadn't brought any because it was well into the afternoon and we expected they'd already have been well sated. [post 109342]

While we were standing on the bank we saw a guy approaching downhill on a bike and running in front of the bicycle was a rat, it looked like it was going to jump into the pond before doing a sharp right turn into the bushes. Other than that everything was as normal as could be expected. [post 109341]

The cygnets have grown ever bigger and the signs of whiteness are appearing more prominently. It wont be much longer until their wings are fully formed. [post 109339]

This is a picture of Bray promenade with Bray Head in the background. If you look closely you can will see the cross at the summit on the left tip.

The cross attracts thousands of climbers every year and although we know it'll be tough at our ages, Billy and I intend to try to get to the top again the next time we're in Bray, which could be as early as next week when we use the all day bus ticket Billy purchased today.

Tomorrow we're going on a day trip to Northern Ireland taking in Belfast and hopefully getting as far as Giants's Causeway. I'm sure Billy will be writing a blog about that during the week.

Maudie and the swans 11 August 2009

Billy and I went to the Phoenix Park on Tuesday evening at five and found the swan family resting on the grassy bank. The youngsters were grooming themselves and the parents were just lying around and keeping a watchful eye out for them.

We had to scale a 30 inch rail to get close and it was as much as I could manage to get my leg over but Billy found it much easier. It wasn't a bad night but it was a bit overcast with a so so threat of rain and there wasn't a sinner around that Billy could ask to take a picture of us with the swans in the background. Post can be used again]

We hadn't bothered to bring any bread because at that time of the afternoon the lake is usually awash with bread floating about. As it happened, we didn't get any indication of whether the swans would have been interested had we brought any bread. [post 109339]

Having finally struggled over the rail I got very close to the swans even though the adults looked like they'd be ready to pounce on me should I venture too close to their .

The cygnets are continuing to grow apace and the first signs of whiteness are beginning to appear on their backs and necks. They are about two weeks younger than the ones in Blackrock Park and those cygnets are a good bit whiter and their wings more developed. [post 109338]

After we gotten sufficient pictures to adorn this post we decided to stroll around the perimeter of Dublin Zoological Gardens which is very close by but before we'd left the swans behind Petr, a polish man walking a named Sparky, came along and we asked him to take a picture with the swans in the background. Billy asked him to take three or four of the same pose. It took him ages to to take the 'pictures' which turned out to be just one picture and even then it was too badly out of focus to upload here.

There are two houses inside the Zoo grounds that look like something out of Hansel and Gretel or Willy Wonka. [post 109336]

As we passed by the houses and entered the back lane at the extreme rear of the gardens we saw a peacock perched on the ten feet tall railing that surround the entire zoo. [post 109337]

Billy took a picture of it for insertion here and we were thrilled to see that it came out clearly against a backdrop of trees but then, just as we were about to move on, the bird hopped down in front of us and it gave the impression of being unable to fly as it flitted about just enough to stay out of arms reach but close enough for us to get some really good shots as we manouevred it into a corner. [post 109335] [post 109334]

At any moment we had expected it to take flight and be gone but the extent of its displayed agility was only sufficient to take it off the floor with a leap onto a four feet high gate. [post 109333]

From there it soon dropped down the other side and twaddled out of view behind a tied cottage. At that point we called it quits and rushed home to see how well the evening's shots had turned out.

Maybe the next time we happen across a peacock at the back of the zoo he'll spread his wings for us in a staged show of flamboyance, but we were just as happy to have him close up and in our sights for as long as we did.

We hope you enjoy the pictures.

We'll be back with more next week.

Billy and me went to the park last Sunday morning as usual and took several pictures of the swan family but we didn't feel like posting any blogs during the mourning period for Billy's sister , Sadie, prior to her burial and send off yesterday. We had a great time yesterday meeting old friends and relatives not encountered in many a long day. The pity was that it had to be the occasion of a funeral to bring it about.

Anyway, when we got to the pond at 10am on Sunday the three cygnets were asleep in the middle of it but before we could get the camera functional a nearby duck disturbed one of them and he or she lifted its head but the other pair ' stayed in bed' for another twenty minutes until just before we left.

We had some bread with us but the swans weren't interested so it all went to the ducks and pigeons. Once again the young ones had taken a big stretch in size since the previous week and they will soon be the same size as their parents judging by the rapid rate at which they're currently growing. The shape of their fur turning to feathers is also becoming more apparent with each passing week.

Billy went to Seapoint (10miles) on his bike today and passed through Blackrock Park along the way. The swan couple that are resident there had eight cygnets last year and all survived to adulthood. This year they almost emulated that by having seven youngsters in May, but alas, only four were in evidence today. Billy asked several onlookers but could get no explanation to what fate may have befallen the other three. There are lots of pictures of that family on Billy's pages at flickr under the heading "Swans in Blackrock Park June 1st. Unfortunately, if that's the right word, he didn't have the camera with him today.

As ever, up to date pictures of the swans in the Phoenix Parkhave been posted at flickr : Username - maudie1950
