Old Catholic Church.
Monday, January 22, 2024.

Greetings Good Citizens!

The Hermitage of San Antonio de Padua de la Tuna is an archaeological site located near the Guajataca River in Isabela, Puerto Rico, dating from 1730.

Yesterday, I visited the archaeological site of an old Catholic Church in Isabela, Puerto Rico. The church was built in 1730, during the height of the Spanish conquest. Looking at the church remains, I asked myself, why is the site that caused so much suffering for the natives still standing? I cannot imagine myself living during those times, where people were persecuted and killed if they didn't comply and converted to the new "Christian" religion.

It was upsetting to me to visit this site yesterday, and the feelings resurfaced today once I began editing the images. The Colonizing Catholic Church contributed to the abuse and death of millions of indigenous people. Missionaries forced indigenous people to convert to Christianity or be killed. Missionaries beat, whipped, tortured, set on fire and killed island natives. Where was God when tragedy struck these innocent men, women and , during times of abuse and suffering?
