Our county Treasurer's office sent me a letter to pay the license on my Mercedes a bit in advance...... My birthday isn't until May 5th. In Iowa you have 30 days prior or after your birthday to acquire the tags for your vehicle.

Earlier in the week the mailman delivered an Imperial German 2* Reichsmark of silver minted in 1913 Berlin. This at the time when a long sleeved man's work shirt cost nearly a quarter of it's value and a good sized loaf of bread was 10 cents in the USA.

Slightly larger than a US quarter it commemorated Prussia's General Blucker's defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte

The reverse shows the Imperial German Eagle swooping down on the French snake.

I had a heck of a time finding just the right frame for the piece. I settled on a black and gold frame, however, it lacked a hanging hook After much consternation I finally managed to nail one on.

The cardboard is a heavy duty double thickness variety. Centering the coin slab I marked out then cut a hole slightly larger.

Good ol' Elmer's Glue now held the black felt in place for the coin display.

Numerous tries later.... messing with the lighting and flash I succeeded in getting a photograph of the finished craftwork. A small Martha Stewart project snowballed into a hefty undertaking.

I closed the deal on the property this morning making a few extra coins but loosing a monthly rental fee. I'll hide the money under the mattress for awhile until I can figure out a better place to stash it.

BRINGING HOME DA BACON !

A local store had 5lbs of BACON for just $14.99 ! I stocked us up for a long time.

You all know how mean and dastardly I am never baking poor neglected JD anything....

This afternoon I baked JD a cherry pie; probably his second favorite next to apple pie. I assure you this is the easiest way to do it. Have your store bought pie crust up to room temperature, as well as, your pie filling.

Using a deep dish pie plate is the best. Center your bottom crust and poke a few vent holes to prevent the crust from bubbling.

Pour your cherries into your mixing container. Add a 1/2 cup sugar and 2* tablespoons of cornstarch. Blend thoroughly.

Add your can of apple sauce blending again.

Pour your pie filling into the crust.

Center your top crust sealing the lower crust to the top. Cut some vet holes to allow steam to escape. Place your pie into a preheated 350 degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes.

Remove your perfect Cherry Pie allowing it to cool on a rack or trivet.

Ides of March

I find it both amazing, as well as, ironic we remember the murder of a Roman General more than 2000 years after his death. I doubt the murder of Lincoln or Kennedy will have such an endurance.

On the Ides of March in 1941 a major blizzard struck the upper Midwestern Plains of the USA killing 166 stranded people. The History Guy covers the disaster much better than I can. I will post a link below if you are interested in the topic.

We all remember the theme to the TV show "GREEN ACRES"

Farm livin' is the life for me.......

What they failed to mention is the POO that occasionally gets tracked into the house!

Last fall we received a shipping box with some parts JD needed. I tossed the box out back so it wouldn't get busted up. I think after it gets dried out I will edge the top in some nice trim boards, fill the nail holes, then paint it.

I will cut some nice 4" X 4" feet for the bottom side then fill it with potting soil. I am thinking Coleus or short Marigolds in it for the patio

Coming up soon is St. Patrick's Day !

You may have noticed in your local markets the low priced cabbage and corned beef. When you get your corned beef make certain you wash it in plenty of fresh water.

Then place in your roaster fatty side down. I season my corned beef with mustard seeds and crushed black pepper. NO SALT ! The corned beef is soaked in brine.

Add your favorite veggies like potatoes, turnips, carrots and of course cabbage. Add some water then bring to a rolling boil before simmering a couple hours.

Sometimes I Cheat and buy ready made pie crust. Unless you make a bunch of pies on a regular basis you can't keep the lard around to do it.

Remember those cheap canned peaches I bought ? Grab a can of them and a can of apple sauce .

If you happen to have one of those handy Danish food processors open your can of peaches and dump it in. Then add 1/2 cup sugar, 2Tablespoons cornstarch, a dash of cinnamon, ground cloves, and allspice.

Then give it a stir chopping the peaches and blending in the other ingredients.

Top this off with the can of apple sauce blending it in too.

Center your pie crust in your deep dish pie plate.. Remember to poke a few holes in the crust with a fork to prevent trapped air bubbles . Then pour your fruit filling in.

Center your top crust over the fruit filling and seal the edges. Cut a few vent hole in the top crust to allow trapped steam to escape. Place in a 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes.

Bake to a golden brown crust allowing to cool slightly before attempting to cut a piece of perfect pie.

There is nothing like a piece of warm pie fresh from the oven with a glass of milk or place a generous dollop of ice cream on top. Mmmmmm !
