Dismal Day (part I )

Ya know it is a dismal day in Iowa when it is cloudy 18 F ~~~ -7C with a freezing drizzle coating everything in a glaze of ice.

It is so Dismal JD asked for cabbage soup! That's like pretending the DDR (East Germany) was a Theme Park !

Cabbage soup was a working man's soup designed to fill him up at a low cost. Normally you'd boil a bunch of beef soup bones, but thanks to the 21st century you don't get any soup bones so you resort to Jamison Beef Soup base.

Put about 4-5 teaspoons of the soup base into about 5cups of water over medium high heat.

Sliver half a medium onion then add it to the beef soup base.

Finely chop about 1/4 of a head of green cabbage then add that to the soup base.

You want to season the soup with Basil, oregano, and fennel.

Also add Black pepper, Paprika, and garlic powder.

IF you see any color in your chopped veggies.... THE SOUP IS NOT COOKED ! Boil the veggies until they are cooked clear giving all their flavor to the broth. Hope you baked a loaf of homemade bread or bought some dry crusty Italian bread at the bakery.

Dish up your soup and place a 1" slab of that Italian bread. Watch how your rich broth is absorbed into the slice.

I top my bread with a blend of grated cheeses.

It's like dipping a cheese sandwich into your hot soup! Enjoy!

With the Holiday Season bearing down on us I did a little experiment I'd like to share. Cheesecake Pudding ! Delicious !

In a two* quart saucepan mix 3Tablespoons Corn Starch, 1/2 cup sugar and a dash of salt

Get all your preparatory work done.... because once things start hitting you don't have time to mess around. You need Two* egg yokes, Two* tablespoons butter, two* teaspoons Vanilla, 8oz Cream cheese and two* cups milk.

Add your milk and vanilla to the dry ingredients and turn the heat to medium high. Be ready to STIR like you're a Pro!

Bring to a gentle boil stirring constantly. After about a minute of boiling remove the pan from the heat; add your butter then slowly the beaten egg yokes. KEEP STIRRING! Add the cream cheese mixing it in gently.

This recipe will make a generous pie or 9" X 9" dessert if you want to make a crust. I would have had 5 dessert dishes but with JD and too many "taste tests" we ended up with *FOUR*

Thankfulness is not limited to a feast on the 24th of November. TODAY I am downright thankful for indoor plumbing! I don't know what I have eaten it seems like I have skipped to the Loo without my darling way over the norm. Had Ruby Red Grapefruit juice for breakfast... 2 glasses.. however, I feel as though I am closing in on the five* gallon mark. It is snowing here... 32 F... 0 C

2PM .. 14:00

The snow is really coming down.

Every now & then this blond packratt finds another "treasure." Out at Grandpa & Grandma's farm behind a shed is a metal bucket used to take ashes from the wood burning cook-stove out to dispose of them safely.

I dumped the dirt & weeds out of the metal container leaving some roots embedded in the rusty tin. By cleaning the hot ashes from our fireplace into the ash-bin I burned them off

The good old wire brush knocked off a lot of the rust....

However, it is the diamond infused brush that gets IN to really clean the surface.

After cleaning the dust from the surface with a "strong solvent" I began painting with a deep penetrating metal based paint.

This paint is an old school product of grandpa's... ( Probably illegal in 29 of the 50 states) BUT it sinks into the cracks sealing them from any further corrosion.

I don't really know what the final color of this ash-bin will be... gold... silver, Harley Davidson metallic blue! This project is just unfolding here today.

Two* Days and THR*EE Loads of dishes later with NO LEAKS from the dishwasher. I repaired the G** D*** Thing better than a "Professional"

Good Dinner today. Took a boneless skinless chicken thigh.

Using kitchen sheers I diced it into about 5-6 cups of water. I also added about 5 teaspoons of chicken soup base.

Ronnie made sure I didn't drop any on the floor.

I diced some celery and baby carrots to add to the chicken broth.

I broke up into pieces some Barilla Fettucine noodles to add to the broth.

Talk about Delicious !!! This Chicken Noodle Soup JD said it was the best I'd ever made ! All I can attribute it to is the Barilla Noodles! Everything else was the same but I'd bought the Barilla brand because they were out of my regular fettuccine noodles.

See that red arrow.... That's where the major leak occurred. I used pipe tread paste and tightened down hose clamps AFTER removing the tags!

Test run of dishwasher............ Working fine so far.... NO LEAKS.....

Yesterday I was downright DUMB ! ... Thinking I was 18 again moving a stack of cinder blocks. I'd hauled some of the blocks to stabilize the Christmas tree in the front lawn

A few Happy pills and a good nights rest and I am back in the daily brawl.
