*~* Friends of the Forests *~* Mushroom lovers know how diverse mushrooms can be - their appearance, taste, texture. growing climate and health benefits can all vary from one species to the next. The majority of the mushroom structure is underground. Whisper thin threads are woven together to create the "mycelium", a web of fibers that wraps around and bore into tree roots and can grow to astonishing sizes. Mycelium helps Trees "communicate" Tree roots are connected to each other through the mycelium of fungi. This allows the tree to send and receive information and nutrients to the surrounding trees. Trees actually use fungi to communicate with each other about their nutritional needs, lack of water and more! This delicate communication system allows smaller saplings to receive assistance from the older and more seasoned trees in the forest. It also helps the trees understand their location relative to other trees, since they like to leave each other a little wiggle room. Any living thing requires energy to live and grow. The fungi living on the forest floors use enzymes to break down fallen trees, plants and dead leaves and convert the decomposed material into energy. This energy is then used to expand the fungi's mycelium or create fruiting bodies - the part of the fungi we see above ground and can eat. Fungi are not picky about their food sources. Some species have adapted to break down extremely potent substances: rock, crude oil, plastics, and even TNT. One species of fungi found is actually radiation resistant and could help clean up nuclear waste sites. Our favorite benefit of fungi - the good eats! My grandmother taught me which ones of our native mushrooms were edible and not... I liked accompanying her when it was harvest time. The one in the first picture I still call "chocolate mushroom". The chanterelles (Pfifferlinge) were rare and a culinary delicacy. Happiness is when what you think, what you say, what you do are in harmony - M. Gandhi

I remember my Dad going "Mushrooming". I asked Mom what they were and she said, a fungus....wellll...I'm not eating a fungus. We had learned the word fungus in grade school and I decided I wasn't eating a fungus Now I buy them and really like them. Alfie loves them and so I learned ... by golly, they are really good.

I had a German neighbour many years ago......my first home after I was married...in the country near Victoria.......Her mane was Hannah Shcmidt.....She was in her 70s......First time I met her was a rainy day....she was walking in the forest, carrying an umbrella in one hand and a basket in the other.....I had never before seen anyone using an umbrella in the forest......We became fast friends and she taught me which mushrooms were edible.... I was frustrated by so many unidentified mushrooms.....I was following a book that said to bring home the mushroom cap and make a "spore print" in order to identify the mushroom.......Hannah laughed her big rolling laugh and told me her method of elimination. You take a small bite of the mushroom, taste it, keeping it in the front of your mouth, then spit it forcefully from your mouth, then bring on as much saliva as you have and spit again....do it once more...... She said that if the mushroom doesn't taste good, you don't have to bother trying to identify it and the small amount of the mushroom that remains in your mouth after the spitting is not enough to harm you.......and now you have eliminated many mushrooms.

In Crystal Falls Michigan, they have a Humoungus Fungus Festival for An Armillaria Gallica Fungus Colony that covers 37 acres of land, weighs roughly 21,000 pounds, and is about 1,500 years old.......it was once the biggest known, but has been beaten apparently by an even bigger fungi.

Great Pictures, myseek. Thanks for sharing. I am scared of eating mushrooms; The reason is simple. Because some of them are poisonous and I can't identify the poisonous ones! The markings on the package would not induce me to eat it. I hope you are well. Be safe.

I used to know someone who picked mushrooms every year in the early fall. There were some types of mushrooms that were very rare and they were shipped to Japan. I think he made big money when he did that. He went to an area that was west of Vancouver somewhere. These are really nice photos MySeek and a very informative article about mushrooms.

Interesting blog Myseek, beautiful pictures. As far as me eating mushrooms, no. I tried them as a kid, tried some when I was older, and still don't like the taste of mushrooms.
