I think everybody once in a while lived in an illusion because it felt so comfortable. It is self deception. Facing the reality at one point may hurt at first, but it opens the door to freedom.
Any examples?

When I realized that there is no God....that the Bible is a work of fiction and Religion is a fool's errand..........

A lot of things I believed in since I was young, and its not about Santa or the Tooth Fairy., I no longer believe but I try not to become too cynical as I get older.

AS SPARKLE SAYS, GETTING AWAY FROM THE BIBLE AND RELIGION IS DIFFICULT. SUCH A COMFORTABLE ILLUSION FOR SO MANY PEOPLE. WHEN WE COME RIGHT DOWN TO IT, WITHOUT ILLUSIONS, MANY PEOPLE WOULD BE UNABLE TO FACE LIFE AT ALL.

In my neck of the woods the Catholic Church provides more food and supplies to homeless people than city government .. it doesn't look like a fool's errand to me.

I'd be interested in hearing some of the wonderful works accomplished by organized atheists.

And by the way my comment is about your words ... "fool's errand" .... not about people who use Religion as a political weapon ... we all know the difference.

Surely you realize that the word "atheist" means not theist....It's a label that is only needed in a place where there is an assumption of religiosity.....Living in Canada or Norway, I never use the term, because there is no assumption that people believe in an invisible superman who lives in the sky and is in control of the whole universe ....

We don't think about a God or about who believes and who doesn't....it's just not how our culture works.......This site is the only place where I refer to myself as an "Atheist" ........because most people here are Americans, who are obsessed with religion and who believes what.....When I first came to this site I was astounded by the child-like beliefs of many here......

Atheism is not a belief system......all it means is a lack of belief in a God.....Apparently in the USA there are some Atheist groups, but they mostly get together to offer emotional support for people kicking the religion habit........You assume that because you have never seen any Atheist charities is because that's not a thing.....Atheists are at least as helpful to others as Christians are, but unlike Christians, we don't have an ulterior motive like Christians do, of evangelizing......We don't help others in exchange for brainwashing others with our own beliefs.....Just think of the horrors the church has committed under the guise of "helping".......

You will find lots of Atheists feeding the hungry, building houses, Doctors Without Borders etc....You just don't know they are Atheists...........
