I'll have a guess at 240.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

depends on if you are a raptor or not..
and which "cage" you are in

I am a "smart ass" raptor so I'll say 100 instead of 240

Old math I would say 240 but it might be this way 20 + (10 x would be 100 Freakin new math

I was taught in your final equation to solve the multiplication first. So it would be :

20 + 10 x 8 ....... 20 + 80 = 100

This is not 'new math' . I learned this in school back in the 1950's.

You are right, Rocket. I also learned in the 50s that multiplication comes first before + and - . Over time those rules fade away. 100 is correct!

I've learnt something new. I wondered if my answer was a little too simplistic.

There are two factor which make it appear both simplistic and obvious that are wrong..

The factor are reading left to right.. Instead of right to left
and the understanding of what and equal sign means..

A person who was taugh to read right to left wouldn't have the problem. nor would a person who would understand both sides of an equal sign.

The answer needs to be the same whether it's 10 x 8 plus 20....or 20 plus 10 x 8.

Thanks for that . I vaguely recall the principle (equation) but never fully grasped it. My first maths teacher had a strong accent and would at times become exasperated on being asked to repeat himself. It was frustrating as I missed out on understanding basic maths principles. And yet, much to my surprise (and annoyance to my then form teacher) , I passed Maths B while predictably failing Maths A. Maths B seemed much different/another language.
