*~*~* Friends for life in the 1950s *~*~*

Decades have gone by, and I think about what my life was like when I grew up. What do I remember when I was a little .....? Today my mind is exploring the years in the 1950s, the school I went to and the group of girlfriends when I was a . When we were 12 - 13 we all had a "Poesiealbum", I don't find a good translation in English, maybe "Friendship book"? Anyway, I got mine at a birthday or found it under the Christmas tree.
My friends, we were girls only at that school, gave me their book to drop a few lines, and I gave them mine. We tried our best handwriting and left a poem or some lines from a song, etc. Some rose stickers or drawings of flowers gave the final touch. In my group we asked to add a photo to better remember who was who years later! My album is still on a book shelve in my other home.

I attached some pictures I found on the net of the then popular "Poesiealbum".

"Roses, Tulips, Carnations wither. Our friendship will stay forever! " Unfortunately, I don't know where their life's journey took them...... In 2009 the school celebrated its 150th anniversary, but I was not in the country and did not have time to participate.

I DO NOT HAVE SUCH AN ALBUM BUT I DO STILL HAVE SEVERAL OF THE FRIENDS I HAD STARTING THE LAST TWO YEARS OF MIDDLE SCHOOL. WE STILL CORRESPOND AND SOME HAVE EVEN COME TO VISIT. THE NUMBER OF TRUE FRIENDS CAN BE COUNTED ON THE FINGERS OF ONE HAND AND I AM AMAZED TO SEE MINE ARE STILL WITH ME.

Very sweet....we had similar things In Norway when I was a child....the exchange of those idyllic shiny coloured pictures.....the "stickers" the stickers and sticker albums that my daughter and her friends shared in the 80s-90s reminded me of them.....

I recently re-connected with my best friend from when I was 12-15.......we were both new immigrants.....She from Italy......We have been talking a lot on Facebook messenger.......sometimes hours......She married very young to a man 15 years older, had 5 children and is now full-time caretaker for her disabled husband........We have a lot of stories to tell each other, LOL

Great memories! I wish I had thought of doing something like that when I was a kid. High school year book is about it for me. I still have a couple of classmates here, but we were never what I would call close friends, though we do stay in touch online. One of my closest friends from that era moved to Alaska and as far as I know, she is still there. She came back a couple decades ago when her brother died. Though it was a sad occasion, it was good to see her.

This kind of album has been custom many generations before. After we graduated from school education, we went to different universities in bigger cities, and some studied in France, England or the Netherlands.... Letters and postcards were sent back and forth at first... New obligations and interests set new priorities, probably.

Those stickers were "in" when I was young. I would like to know where my "friends" are, what their life's journey was like..... only having their maiden names, makes it impossible.
I have seen your new profile picture.... I liked it, but it is gone. LOL

It was a European thing, especially a German thing. You have the high school year books, which we did not have. You did not move away from where you grew up, I guess. I think that is an advantage because that way the past and presence are connected. The girls in my friendship group were not all my "close friends", only one was my best friend. But that is another story.
