TBT - A day trip in the 50th

When we had school holidays, my parents always planned a one day excursion to the Teutoburg Forest about 20 miles away from home. It was an absolute highlight. The planning before was exciting, because that wooded area has many historically interesting places and decisions had to be made. One time we decided for the "Externsteine" , a sandstone rock formation that consists of several tall impressive pillars. It was a sacred site for many tribes, the pagan Saxons celebrated summer solstice there. As a I was not interested in its ancient history and that the Germans had defeated the Romans in the Teutoburg Forest, but that we had enough sandwiches, apples, juice and candy. LOL And, maybe, there was the chance for some ice cream. The excursion started with a ride on the tram. Dad had the task that we walked the right direction and he had fun acting as though we got lost. We talked a lot and laughed, and I got ice cream in the end.

It sounds like an interesting destination, but the important part of the memories is the family time. At the moment, we don't realize that, but as we get older, we appreciate it more.

In the 50th we were more grateful for everything "Extra", and those little trips are good memories.

When I grew up I learned to cherish the "little" things, when nothing was available in abundance.

First off, what kid doesn't think of food? That was the best part of a day trip and then ice cream to end the day.

Those are some really interesting photos and history.

Great trip back in time!

When I think back, I believe that my childhood was happier than what is lying ahead of the kids today. I got the necessary tools to plan my future as an adult. Now it seems that everything is falling apart.......
