Photo Friday - Letter D

Picture 1)

Dulcimer - This instrument was made by Gene and is easier to play
than a banjo, I find.

Picture 2)

Dream Catcher - Dream Catchers were originally made by American Indians.
They are regarded as good luck charms and are thought to literally catch nightmares,
letting positive dreams enter the subconscious mind of a sleeping person.

Picture 3)

Dishes - This set of dishes for 8 People we gave to one of Gene's granddaughters when she married, with the idea that the people might occasionally cherish the old-fashioned culture of laying the table on special events. Unfortunately the couple
divorced a year later.........

Picture 4)

Dessert - After dinner dessert at Lady Bedford's Tea Parlor

You found some good examples! I always enjoyed "mountain music" and admire anyone who can play the banjo. We have sold some factory made decorative 'dream catchers' but in actuality they were mandalas, but people liked them for their subject matter of the pictures on them.
I don't know if younger folks set tables like we used to do for special occasions.... and I can almost taste those deserts!

Such a pretty pattern on the dishes. I've always loved the color combination of blue and green. It's very restful. Love all of the photos, and wow do those desserts look good!!

A day without dance is .... just kidding. I have no idea!

In the 70s I would often drive across town to see a friend and I couldn't take my hands off her 3 string Dulcimer. I knew some guitar chord shapes and that may or may not have helped my Dulcimer playing lol ... I don't know. I just played rhythms by ear and we enjoyed playing together.

Great instrument. How lucky you are to have found it ... or did it find you?

The dulcimer looks beautifully crafted by your friend Gene. I've read choice of timbers is important in wanting to achieve a certain clarity and quality of sound. I've never seen/heard a dulcimer played live.

I've never had a dream catcher either - it was interesting to learn their purpose. Thanks myseek :- )

Lovely collection of photos for the theme "D". That instrument is strange to me, would like to hear how it sounds. Beautiful set of dishes, Karin, I love it. And the dessert looks delicious!

Playing and listening to music benefits both mental and physical health...... I cherish my dreamcatcher and trust in its magic of giving me a peaceful sleep at night.
I know that the young folks don't care for nice looking dishes anymore, we just gave it a try. lol That desert was part of a menu on Valentines Day!

My dreamcatcher came from the Lakota (Sioux) children at St. Joseph's. One of the dulcimers Gene had made is displayed behind glass with a commemorative plaque in a museum in WV. I also love the sound of the balalaika. My daughter's father had and played that instrument. Dr. Zhivago is one of my favorite movies..... and Lara's song triggers my emotions.....

I love to serve meals on nice china dishware because the eye "eats too". LOL Hmm, the mousse au chocolat, chocolate-dipped strawberries and the chocolate kisses as well, complemented the meal. It was on Valentine's Day 5 years ago......

The dessert not only looks good, it was delicious. It is sad that the Tea Parlor had to close their business down due to the C virus.

Yes, Lilium, we had cherry, walnut, mahogany. chestnut, redwood, oak......... Although that instrument originated in Europe hundreds of years ago, I saw it in the US for the first time. It is said that the dream catcher has magical properties...... you have to trust the magic!

Lucy, welcome to my "D" blog! That instrument is popular among those people who play Mountain Music. I love the "old" way of serving meals on nice dishes, too, and keep up with that culture. That dessert was very, very good.
