*~*~*~ First Snow *~*~*~*

Last weekend they had a good amount of snow in the low mountain ranges in Germany.
Everybody who could went out enjoy hiking and playing in the snow. My granddaughter, her husband and friends were very excited take little Fredie out into a nature he had not seen before. First he was perplexed, I was told. LOL But then he enjoyed building a snowman with his dad........ Below some impressions of the white winter scene.

I don't remember my first acquaintance with the joy of snow. All I remember most, is the sound of war and hiding with fear. I hope, this little guy will grow up in a peaceful environment.

How precious to see the world through the wondering eyes of a child.
When my children were little, I remember reading this statement: I brought my child into this world, now I will let him show it to me.
Somehow, I always found time to build that snowman, go watch ants crawl out of their hills, or try to count the stars with my little ones. Later on, it was with my grandies. Time spent that I will never regret.

Yes, MrsJoe, it is precious to rediscover the world through the eyes of a child. I would so much love to be physically there and not just see the little one grow up from far away. I want to plant an apple tree with him in my garden like I did put in the ground a cherry tree when my granddaughter was small. Now she is tall and harvests the cherries......

What lovely pictures MySeek. I remember when I was a child we had a lot of snow during the winter. We would go sledding in the evening after chores and the evening meal. If the moon was out then it was like it was the middle of the day it was so bright with the moonlight shining on the snow.

Beautiful pictures MySeek, I think all children love snow. We don't get snow very often in Ireland, but when we do the kiddies sure make the most of it. I love to look out on a snow covered garden or street, so pretty and bright.

WE had a very light dusting of snow over Christmas. It was lovely to see the little kiddies out all excited making little snow balls. It only lasted for one day.

The snow blanketed fir trees look so beautiful. Your family look to be having fun in the snow and I had to laugh that your great grandson was understandably perplexed on coming across a white, wondrous landscape. I was thinking about the dog - would it get chilblains or ice burns from walking on the snow or cold, wet ground? I know there are waterproof, anti-slip dog shoes/booties available for the snow/winter.

In the hills where I have my home, winter looks like what you see in the pictures. We have snow from end of December through January. On weekends we enjoyed cross-country skiing on trails through the woods.

Winter can be so exciting with kids around...... build a snowman together or have a snowball fight....... With snow everything outside looks clean and new. Where I am now, we have not seen one snowflake as yet.

Lilium, I had to laugh, too, when I imagined his perplexed look. Walking in the snow does not harm dogs as long there is no de-icing salt spread. Their paws are made to tolerate any contact with cold surfaces, including snow and ice. Their circulatory system in the paws has adapted to handle the cold.

Thanks for your reply. The reason I asked is because a current TV commercial for a premium dog food brand features a handler with his avalanche search & rescue dog (NZ LandSAR) walking across snow covered mountain terrain and noticed the dog was wearing booties as well as a jacket. I found an interesting article online that supports the explanation you gave re circulatory system in dogs paws having adapted to handle the cold - thanks for that. It also cautions the need to be careful because not all dogs are suited to have their paws on ice for long periods of time and even in the extremely demanding Iditarod race across Alaska, the dogs wear booties to protect them against abrasions from ice and snow. I don't imagine your granddaughter's dog would be at risk.

I like to continue our conversation, Lilium! My granddaughter grew up with a dog and learned from her parents what a dog can do and what not. They had a Golden Retriever then and now. Her dog is a rescue dog from Romania. A German association set themselves the task to find a good home for stray dogs and cats, mainly from poor countries. My granddaughter fell in love with the little one three years ago. With a reward system for good behavior and training sessions in a dog school, the dog became a lovely and protecting companion.

I see your granddaughter is experienced and well informed about dogs. I really like the Golden Retriever, they seem to have an excellent temperament/gentle disposition. I'm so glad the stray dog is safe from roaming Romanian vampires (joking) and thanks to the pet rescue organisation and your granddaughter's acceptance, has found a warm haven and blossomed under her care. It's so encouraging to hear - thank you myseek.
