*~*~*~* Highlights in December (2)*~*~*~*

Today is the 2nd Advent and Nicholas Day. It is a tradition in Germany that the put a pair of shoes in front of the door before they go to bed on the 5th of December. Of course, the shoes have to be CLEAN, and they are busy rubbing shoe cream on, brushing and polishing their shoes. Next morning, the 6th of Dec. they run to the door to see what St. Nicholas has put in their shoes....... they are filled with sweets, nuts, cookies and small presents. It can happen that mum and dad find a surprise in their shoes also.

I wish you joyful, festive days this Christmas season.

I posted this blog earlier, but noticed that something went wrong. The first one tells 5 comments, but there aren't any. LOL I tried to attach 9 photos. That does not work either.

    Quoting  :

As I know, Nicholas was the bishop of Myra in the 4th century. Nicholas' parents died when he was young, leaving him a large sum of money. With his inheritance, Nicholas practiced charity, helping those in need. He was also a fierce advocate for those who had been unjustly condemned. He is the beloved patron saint of children and gift-giving. I grew up with the tradition of St. Nicholas Day and passed it on to my daughter and she to her daughter. Today my little great-grandson found mandarins and cookies in his shoe.......

Takes me back to my early childhood days also - leaving grass in our shoes by the front door for Sinterklaas' (St Nicholas) white horse. Sinterklaas was always accompanied by his helper Zwarte Piet (Black Peter). A joyful Christmas season to you also MySeek.

MySeek many year ago I had a roommate who was from Holland. We always celebrated St. Nicholas day. I kind of liked that custom. She was from the northern part of Holland which is called Friesland. We ate kale and Dutch sausage with mashed potatoes. In those days there was no fresh kale so we bought it in a can which was imported from Holland. To this day I still eat kale and sausage. My remembrance of my Dutch roommate.
