Boy is off to France

I dropped the boy off at the airport today. He's spending a few weeks of his summer between high school and college doing some vagabonding in Europe. He speaks French (pretty well) and his best friend is French and will also be there for his summer vacation. He's travelling with another friend of his and they'll be going to Spain and Netherlands before my ventures out on his own for 9 days to Monaco and Italy before coming home. When I was his age, I was living in Germany. He went to France last year with his friend's family. His friend's dad works for a French company that has offices here in San Jose and they go back in the summer. They have been coaching my on his French and people compliment him on his pronunciation. Last year he lost his glasses in the English Channel, this year he brought extra contact lenses.

Thank you for your kind note. I do like Amsterdam and the surrounding area very much. Some of the little towns along the rivers are a delight to visit and I like all of the museums of various sorts. The virus is really causing problems with my work because I can't travel to get things done. It is causing me to get behind schedule on many projects but I am still healthy so I can't complain. Hope you and everyone else manage to stay healthy too.

I have a friend who moved from this area to NZ. She married there and has become a citizen. Was living in Wellington last I heard from her. It is a place I would love to see but microbiology has interrupted live as usual for most of us in the world. I do like living here but it is not "retirement friendly" as it is one of the most expensive places in the US to live. My kids are here, though. The oldest has found a place of her own and my youngest will start his second year of college, probably studying from home this fall.

We had a long holiday weekend and I managed to travel a bit locally to the old gold mining area of the Sierra Nevada foothills. I needed a haircut and the barbers are not yet open here so I drove to a more rural part of the state where I found someone open.

If you should visit California sometime, do drop a note and maybe we could chat over a glass of local wine.

This plague seems to be never ending. I need to go to Sydney in Australia for work as soon as I can get a vaccination. Probably sometime in your fall.
