I went from high school to marriage and raising a family. Social life was centered around family, and later around church family and events. My husband and I did both belong to bowling teams, and those times with the "girls" were good and one great friendship developed for me out of it. We still stay in contact on face book. I also have a childhood friend (we met when we were 3 years old) that I talk to on the phone and occasionally meet with in person.
After I joined SFF and met and married Joe, I have met many, many members in person and have had some great times together. But as you mentioned about getting older and folks dying, getting more disabled, living too far away, and losing interest or ability to travel, those days are just great memories, with hopes for another meeting "someday".
We do have one couple whom we meet a few times a year and spend a week or more at a time to relax and have fun. We recognize and accept each others' limitations, but we all still love the laughter and comradery that comes with good friends.

Pat you and Joe are so fortunate that you are still able to travel even if it isn't all that far away. I don't do much travelling other than to Alberta to visit family. I have been thinking about flying to Ontario, Canada to visit an old friend. I saw her three years ago when I was in Ontario. We have been friends since the 60's and she is one of the few I have left that I keep in touch with. I never kept in touch with school friends except one but that ended many years ago. I often wonder where they all are. If they have had high school reunions I have never heard about them. Guess when I moved to the coast from Alberta they had no way of contacting me.

How many of us "vowed" to keep in touch with school chums and didn't? I know the whereabouts of so very few of my classmates. A few do still live in our general area, and we intersect in life other than being classmates, but there is no closeness.
I still get notices of class reunions, but I have never gone to any of them. I was always too busy, and now I really do not have an interest in going. I would rather go to an SFF gathering because I have more in common with SFF folks.
Joe and I attended his 50th class reunion for our honeymoon, but there has not been any more reunions for that class. I heard the ones who had always put it together were in poor health, and some had even passed away.
