Plus ca change

I am reading a book about the history of the Roman Catholic papacy and its inglorious past.

One sentence in it struck me as very applicable to today.

It talks about the beliefs in witchcraft in the 15th centurty.

This is the sentence that stood out for me.

This sentence describes fairly accurately the views of Trump supporters.
Despite clear evidence of his ineptitude, his moral degeneration, and complete lack of qualification for high public office, the Trumpists continue to stick with him.

 And it's not just Trumpism......There's a lot of deliberate misinformation out there, like Q-anon, Facebook tropes, Tucker Carlson.....It seems to be a wide-spread infection.

On this site, I come across blogs posting rank lies...and when I counter those lies and offer the facts, I'm treated like I'm a spoil-sport.....and I'm doing it for self-aggrandizement ...How did this happen, this gullibility, this appetite for lies, this contempt for rational thought?

I try to imagine what those beliefs in witchcraft would have manifested if there had been internet in the 15th century.. The Catholic Church spread a lot of crazy beliefs............

You are quite correct, but Trumpism seems to have more adherents than all the others.

Yes, I agree....Trump vilified people every day....made up insulting names for everyone, yet those Trumpists were losing their minds over President Biden responding to some states removing all Covid protocols, said it's "Neanderthal thinking" and the Trumpists lost their shit and defended the character of Neanderthals.....said they were good honest people who uphold Family Values........

 PLUS CA CHANGE, PLUS C'ST LA MEME CHOSE. SOME PEOPLE JUST CANNOT LET GO NO MATTER HOW GREAT THE PROOF AGAINST THEIR BELIEFS. WE SEE IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN, LOTS OF PEOPLE REFUSE TO FACE COLD FACTS AND THAT, MY FRIEND, IS THAT.

 It's interesting that I read today in a number of news sources that Trump's lawyers have notified the Republican party that they are not to use his name in any of their fund raising advertising.
