first what privileges are people of color deprived . i live in the south and am a with no apologizes a proud decendent of a CONFEDERATE SOLDIER. as i have mentioned here he was 16 , only in usa E1 years from IRELAND.

White Privilege is something that White people take for Granted and don't even have to think about. I certainly didn't think about it until I became a Quaker. I do remember working as a care provider and having to drive across the river. I never got stopped by the police. The two young black men who also worked there would tell me that they got stopped and question EVERY time they drove across the river to work. I would frequently get stopped when I was working at Wal-Mart and driving home at the wee hours. I was profiled as a potential drunk but able to quickly convince them that I was just going home from work. The young black man who lived in our household would get stopped, questioned, possibly searched for doing the same.

Also, it is interesting being Irish and a confederate soldier. My 3rd Great Grandfather was drafted into the confederate army but paid $300. for a substitute. An Irishman. This happened to a lot of the Irish who came here. They were immediately drafted into a cause that was not theirs while the Plantation owners stayed home or became officers and let the Irish do the dangerous work. My poor third Great Granddaddy, he did lose his slaves after the war but deeded some of his land to those that were kin. It was all for a bad cause.

Hello Starwomyn.........After reading this I wish that you would write a blog about it I mean the part.........white privilege is something that white people take for granted and don't even have to think about it.

It is very true and some folk seem to get incensed when people talk about racism in this country. I also think some know that is a fact and they want to keep it that way too.

Hello Frenchsalsa.......Thank you for your input glad you enjoyed the picture and the blog. I always thought that Canada was a place where they did not discriminate?
True, Bright! However, it seems that in the past couple of year we appear to be noticing it more.. so unfortunate!

Non-violent protest, not a problem. The point is to draw attention to their protest in a manner that is non-violent - I'd say they are doing a fine job of that by silently taking a knee. Kaepernick was drawing attention to the problem, not himself. Kaepernick and others protest for a cause, not necessarily for what is in it for themselves. They have the attention, so they are using their notoriety to stand up for others who don't share in the spot-light and often go unheard or ignored.
Hi Hobsonschoice.........You are exactly right and I agree but the powers that be are making sure that he does not get a job. He is paying a very high price for it. That is the reason that I wrote this blog .....because of the price he is paying I knew that I had to do something. I am hoping that because of this someone will not be afraid and try to get to know some people of color. I have talked to people on here and when they met me at a bash they found out I was no different than them and now I value those relationships.

Bright, could you please tell me why National flags are displayed while people in a body indulge in killing fellow citizens whom they do not like especially for the color of their skin and the religion they practice? Wishing you all the best.

"It is not about a lack of patriotism or disrespect for the flag. We protest because we DO love our country and want to see it do better." Those are your words and since you have taken the time to mention this several times, let me ask you a simple question. When Barack Obama was President, didn't you also love our country and want to see it do better? Sure, you did. Did you protest then? No? Why not?

You are 78 years old and I am sure you have seem some horribly racist events in your life. I am not quite 70 and I have, especially when I lived in the South in the 50's. But those times have changed and America has made progress. So tell me, Brightsmile, a few of the things which I am allowed to do that you aren't? I can't think of a single one.

Hello Fossil......Thank you for your input. I painted that picture about 15 years ago. I suppose you have had white privilege all of your life and that is why you do not recognize or have not noticed how in some things you are treated differently than a black man in the same situation. Perhaps I am not explaining it well to you but If you will check the things Tim Wise writes ,I am sure he will be able to explain and give you examples of white privilege. He is a white man also.

Canada has a different history than the US, so the racial dynamics are different, but there is plenty of racial discrimination involving our First Nations population........

Sadly, we have race baiters, motivated by greed for money and power who have fueled racism in our country for years. It seems that all the good works of MLK have been negated in a lot of places.
I see those rich spoiled athletes not really working towards solutions for anything, but just grabbing attention and publicity and the NFL being complacent in it. They would do much better protesting and doing good in their communities and working to help young people to make a difference in our world. Instead they choose to stomp on people's emotions of patriotism.... why? To gain more attention for themselves.
If common folks, of all colors, could just sit down and talk, what a much more peaceful country we would have.
Instead, we have all the attention on the publicity grabbers and spectacular events..... and once again, common people are overlooked.
What is the source of your assumptions about athletes?......Go to Kaepernick's page and look at who he's donating to......what solutions he's working towards.

Thanks to all of you who shared your views.....pro and con. I was hoping to be able to shed some light on what is going on in our country. I pray that one day we will be able to have talks as they did in South Africa when Apartheid ended. I believe then we can erase the fear and hatred.

My grandmother once told me........There is none so blind as those that refuse to see.

Sparkleflit............summed it up well I think. here is what she said.........."Yeah, I don't get why so many people keep going to the flag thing, even though the protesters themselves keep telling them it's about Social Justice.......Seems like they choose to misunderstand in order to justify their anger and outrage to themselves and others."

I think she is right.................Thanks to all of you. I have to get back to painting to make some money.....lol. I will not be able to reply as promptly as before but I will.
