This is a figurine I made out of plastic clay with a wire armature and wrappings of cloth strips dipped in white acrylic resin, then painted he is about 15 inches tall...He was part of a montage that I later dismantled and this is mostly all that's left of it....I was thinking of the war and the ultimate traitor .........

The Figurine is definitely the face of war and betrayal. I have made a similar type figurine but not war and betrayal. Bafana will hang outside my door in January. She is like a female Santa Claus and an Italian tradition.

When I made him, he was naked except for shiny shoes, a neck-tie and an overcoat...He was "flashing", but where his was supposed to be, there was a huge chainsaw and his body was covered in unhealed cuts....He was posed on a round of wood....a stump.... and he was called "Letcher Challenge" .......

There was a large logging company out of New Zealand who were decimating our area. Their lawyers had found loopholes in the logging regulations and they were destroying our islands...destroying our wilderness adventure economy. And they were fast..

The annual art show in a neighbouring city was coming up and I had a place in it for a sculpture.....Al the big-wigs would be there...The curator's husband was working for Fletcher Challenge as a local reconnaissance and we placed this sculpture on a plinth right at eye-level as they entered, with the name in large letters....We watched them come in, look at the sculpture and there was no response....nothing...nada.

There was, predictably, lots of outrage from many quarters and it made the cover of a local magazine and he became a mascot for logging protesters on the the coast for a while.......Some loggers were very triggered by it and I just took it apart...He had done all he could .

Yup....I had him up in the co-op gallery where I worked one day a week and the response was very mixed...some people laughed heartily and some were strongly repulsed....He definitely drew a lot of attention....

A Quisling through and through....I grew up with my father and his friends talking about the terrible betrayal by Quisling....

Interesting, as usual.

I remember the ads for period products from when I was bleeding and birthing.......the TV and magazine ads used a blue liquid to represent blood.....LOL...Our blood was considered shameful and dirty and disgusting....We went to great lengths to hide it from the males....winding toilet paper around the used pad before disposing of it,, so no blood was visible, to protect the sight from any males that might see it....The emotional and mental effects the period hormones had on us was to be kept strictly to ourselves ...we wrapped them up like the pad to protect the males....

There was a male culture that encouraged making jokes about our bleeding...If we were angry at a guy...no matter how much he deserved it, he would respond by suggesting we were on our period, shaming us in order to deflect responsibility for their own behaviour....an easy out....

20+ years ago, I was asked to do a painting for the front desk of the "Women's Centre".....As part of the painting I wrote a line about a sisterhood bound by milk and blood ....and some male board members flipped out because they assumed I was advocating violence, because it never occurred to them that women's relationship to blood was about their monthly flow and giving birth....How blood is our friend that visits for a few days every month .....

I have made many paintings and sculptures celebrating women's blood and milk...birthing and nurturing....And they have been predictably very controversial....Why?

We celebrate International Women's Day....I usually contribute with some creative entertainment/educational/group presentation....about 10 years ago, I had the idea that we write a group poem about our experience of bleeding. I thought a woman from each age-group would write and read a verse about their experience and we would all recite the chorus together....incorporating different cultural practices.....I just happened to talk to teen girls and young women first.....The younger they were, the more enthusiastic they were about the project....Then I hit a wall with women over 40...and women my age were appalled and so embarrassed by even the thought of bringing attention to their bleeding, that they turned their head in shame just at the mention....

Women bleed and birth and secrete milk from our breasts...That's what makes the World go around....We all came from a woman's bloody vagina...each and every one of us.....We are the bleeders and the birthers and that's what Feminists are doing...Yesterday, Today and as long as Humans inhabit this planet..
