MEANWHILE..... So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence.... Bertrand Russell |
|||
|
Russell described himself in 1947 as an agnostic, saying: "Therefore, in regard to the Olympic gods, speaking to a purely philosophical audience, I would say that I am an Agnostic. But speaking popularly, I think that all of us would say in regard to those gods that we were Atheists. In regard to the Christian God, I should, I think, take exactly the same line"

Those of us who have spent much time in the world of spiritual make-believe have eventually seen the childishness of it. This dream world has been replaced by a great sense of purpose, accompanied by a growing consciousness of the power of God in our lives. We have come to believe He would like us to keep our heads in the clouds with Him, but that our feet ought to be firmly planted on earth. That is where our fellow travelers are, and that is where our work must be done.

While the KJV only uses the word intelligence a couple of times, and it may not even have the same connotation as we use the word today, the Bible does have much to say about and encourages knowledge, learning, and wisdom. I would say that is just another way to say using intelligence. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

On awakening let us think about the twenty-four hours ahead. ... Before we begin, we ask God to direct our thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonest or self seeking motives. Under these conditions we can employ our mental faculties with assurance, for after all God gave us brains to use.

OF COURSE NOT. THE WHOLE MYTH OF ADAM AND EVE IS THAT THEY WERE PUNISHED FOR ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE. AND LATER ON DID SOMEONE NOT PRAISE THE SIMPLE OF MIND? INTELLIGENCE MEANS QUESTIONING AND WE KNOW THAT CAN BE RISKY.

We got the AA manual and now we get the KJV manual.......Sure.......here we go .."The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge"......." The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD—"......."Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I trust your commands."......and so on and so forth...... Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

I was simply responding to the assertion in the blog that there was no praise for intelligence in the Bible by mentioning there is for the same thing without using the word. That's all. Perhaps it's better if I don't even respond to your blogs of this kind.

Obviously, I am a long time XII Stepper thus use the principles and concepts that I learned through out the years and they work out well for me. Thinking devoid of thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonest or self seeking motives works out well for atheists as well as theists, agnostics and deists.

|
And I was giving you examples of how the words "learning, knowledge and wisdom" are used in the KJV..... not as intelligence, but as obedience to the rules imposed by self-proclaimed prophets of an imaginary deity........You made a vague claim without any evidence/examples.....how did you think an Atheist would respond? Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

I understand that those who have managed to control their addictions using the AA protocol feel a certain loyalty to the organization, but it says nothing interesting or useful to me........and certainly has nothing to do with this blog.

Touché! Smiling. I guess we each respond according to our beliefs and views. I do believe that the Bible doesn't only refer to spiritual learning, but to learning of all kinds. But that is my point of view.

- INTELLIGENCE MEANS QUESTIONING - There's questioning and there's questioning - 'thinking within a fixed circle of one's ideas tends to restrict the questions to a limited field. And if one's questions stay in a limited field, so also do the answers' David Bohm Erik Rittenberry's 'Rethinking the Creation Story' is an insightful slant on the Garden of Eden/Adam & Eve.

MrsJoe - I don't think she is looking for an answer so much as she is a debate.

Thomas Jefferson says it best. Question with boldness even the existence of God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear” Thomas Jefferson Personally, I see the bible as a combination of history, mythology and a few truths. I certainly don't believe that Jonah was swallowed by a whale and survived nor do I believe that Noah rode around in an Ark with a bunch of animals for 40 days. Still that doesn't rule out the existence of a Higher Power. Folks will base their concept of God or No God on their families, community, and culture.

I vaguely remember someone quoting the good book where Jesus said all who preached before him were false profits.------- or something to that effect. All mankind was to follow him. When I read that--- I thought ----Then Moses was a false profit??????????? The TEN COMMANDMENTS which he brought forth & taught (old testament) was established by multiple or a singular false profit making them irrelevant?????????????????????
