NEO-LUMINISM IN SAN ANTONIO TEXAS

I studied his work years ago and attempted to achieve even a small amount of the luminosity in his work.....to no avail....LOL...I greatly admire what he has achieved, but find it a bit much.....He doesn't share what he has learned and I don't blame him, but I hope he passes on more of his knowledge before he disappears into the luminous.......Amazing achievement.......I would love to see his work in person.....and meet him.....such a craftsman...

From an interview"Steven DaLuz: I developed a process using composition gold leaf, copper leaf, chemically-induced patinas, oil and other mixed media. As light passes through the glazes of oil, it bounces off the underlying metal leaf, creating a glow that sometimes appears to come from within the painting..

I remember very clearly being in my grandfather's studio when he was applying gold leaf.....I had to sit very still and he would brush my cheek very gently with the special, soft brush and then move it to the pile of gold sheets and they would rise and cling to the brush with static electricity.....then he would move the brush with clinging gold to the surface he was gilding. There was a pot of rabbit-skin glue on the hot-plate....I remember the smell.....it had to be applied warm....It looked like an effortless dance the way he worked. My father apprenticed with him, but those skills were not in demand after the war.....I wish I had asked him to teach me.

I made a big mess trying it for myself.....very expensive to learn without someone to show you......I watched many youtube tutorials, but they were all hobbyists who used cheap imitations and just gooped it on. I did find one that looked more precise, but it was in a language I didn't recognize.

If he shared it with no one, then his technique died with him..... how sad. Unless someone stumbles upon it by trial and error.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

No, no, he's still very much alive.....I can't blame him for holding his technique close to his chest, he developed it himself through experimentation and hard work...I'm just selfish and frustrated that he doesn't teach it.......LOL

Meanwhile, I've been doing some research and found an interview in which he talks about the extremely poisonous layers of varnishes that he sprays on his paintings......he does this outdoors wearing a heavy-duty gas-mask.......Well that rules out his technique for my purposes.....I believe in ethical art......there is so much garbage produced......I remember in art school, all the mediums and techniques my husband and I rejected on grounds of pollution.....we quit and ran into the wilderness and built wooden boats......I was hoping that DeLuz was using the lost techniques of those luminous painters of the Renaissance.....Oh well, back to the drawing board.
