PARAPROSDOKIAN

Paraprosdokian is a figure of speech in which the second part of a sentence is antithetical to the beginning........Comedian Steven Wright is a master of the form. Here are some examples of his humor......Not as funny as when delivered in his acerbic monotone style......

Support bacteria - they're the only culture some people have.

When everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.

Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now.

Shin: a device for finding furniture in the dark.

Many people quit looking for work when they find a job.

I intend to live forever - so far, so good.

Join the Army, meet interesting people, kill them.

A friend of mine once sent me a post card with a picture of the entire planet Earth taken from space. On the back it said, “Wish you were here.”

A lot of people are afraid of heights. Not me, I’m afraid of widths.

All those who believe in psychokinesis raise my hand.

Borrow money from pessimists-they don’t expect it back.

Change is inevitable….except from vending machines.

Cross country skiing is great if you live in a small country.

Smiling here..... I've always enjoyed those surprise endings, but never realized there was a word for it.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

It's good to learn new things, but somehow I just can't see me using that word in conversation. I mean, honestly, could you see me saying to someone who had just made one of those statements, "Oh, that's so funny. It's really so paraprosdokian." Lol.... I probably couldn't pronounce it, or even remember it!

My intellectual curiosity has never been based on function..........
