A friend took these photos today when we went for a walk on the beach.....He takes a lot of bird photos and has a spectacular zoom-lens......

The fish is a tidepool sculpin....Once I saw a water-snake in the mouth of a creek that was really weird......I watched it swimming for a while, then, when it went ashore and I could get a closer look, I saw that it was a regular snake that had swallowed a large sculpin tail-first. The sculpin had opened it's gill-covers so wide, preventing it from going any farther down the snakes gullet.....the snake had disjointed it's jaw and they were the same colour and texture and looked like a weird snake-fish centaur-thing with a snake body and fish head.

Wow Sparkle beautiful pictures. The blue herons have hundreds of nests by the tennis courts in Stanley Park. They are very close to the water so they do a lot of fishing to feed their young when they hatch out of their eggs in the spring. They are a huge bird.

I'm really happy to hear that the herons are thriving in Stanley Park...their nesting sites are diminishing in many places. I love it when they make their loud call as they flap their enormous wings...sounds like I imagine a Pterodactyl would sound.....The way they stand so perfectly still for so long then suddenly dart.....

Sparkle the herons have been in Stanley Park for a long time. They used to nest over by the zoo area in the park and then there was a lot of construction going on so they moved to where they are now. The parks board put metal sheeting around the bottom of all the trees they nest in so raccoons and other animals cannot climb the tree to snatch the eggs. But I am sure they are bothered by other predator type birds.
