COUGAR ATTACK

Around 7 pm tonight, I heard the ambulance go by, then a few minutes later I got a phone call to tell me that a friend had been attacked by a cougar.....he parked in his driveway, opened the car door, put one leg out and a cougar jumped out of the bushes and attacked him......he beat it over the head with his cane and got the door closed again and phoned the mounties........My first reaction was horror of course, but then I laughed till the tears rolled.......You would have to know the guy......just the picture in my head of him bopping a cougar over the head with his cane......He got away with a few scratches.....lucky guy.

I had been walking in the woods just a couple of hours earlier, a 1/4 mile from the attack.....Yeatch!!!!.....Wildlife Services will be on the island hunting it first thing tomorrow........There is something wrong with a cougar who attacks a Human......Last time a cougar came even close, was 30 years ago.A man heard his making strange crying sounds outside. He grabbed a flashlight and opened the door to see a cougar with his dog's head in it's mouth......the cougar immediately let go and took off.

The Wildlife guys were very familiar with it.....they had been tracking him for years. Some people had put out illegal bear traps in their orchards to catch raccoons. The young cougar got caught in one and damaged his leg so he couldn't hunt. Another, older cougar hunted with him for 6 months. Cougars are loners and never hunt together, so this was a very rare partnership. When the injured cougar's foot healed, he was on his own again, but his foot didn't heal properly.

The Wildlife guys could tell by his tracks....the foot was deformed. So, apparently he lost the ability to feed himself and so it was extreme hunger that forced him to hunt easy prey.......it was his undoing however and he was culled.

Oh my. I hope that fella can laugh about it in the future, but it had to be downright scary for him at the time! You definitely need to be cautious for awhile, until they get it tracked down.

Wow that would certainly startle me too. I hate snakes. Two years ago I came across a 7 foot black snake in my neighbors yard as I was preparing to cut my daughter's lawn. It freaked me out all summer. There is also a fox that gets around the neighborhood from time to time that concerns me. But a cougar...wow.

I have a friend who is a retired journalist from Britain. He does wonderfully witty cartoons and has written several books........He is part owner in a vineyard on the island. He tells the story of a bear that raided the vineyard for 20 nights in a row and the unsuccessful efforts made to capture him.

He self-published a little book telling the story and illustrated it liberally with his clever cartoons. I bought several of them for Christmas gifts this year.........When I heard about our friend bopping the cougar over the head with his cane, the picture in my head was a cartoon by Peter..............
