You could delete the word "Virginia" from your title and it would still be correct. I have to admit that watching them self-destruct is very entertaining.

Considering the fact that Virginia was the hot seat of the Old South, Jim Crow Laws were not repealed until 1965 and it takes time for the old attitudes to change, I don't get unglued when it is revealed that a politician wore blackface in his college years. It is my experience and observation that most Virginians and West Virginians (but not all) have moved forward from those attitudes. I lived in Virginia for a few years. It actually has more diversity than West Virginia.
