THE KISS DIAMOND... Part One.

THE KISS_DIAMOND... Part One.

IN THE BEGINNING.

It was still dark and the Wood-Ghouls seemed to whisper their horrid chants from every tree. The Sun had not come up and the darkness seemed to stick to the world like glue.
I hurried on.
“You are too early!” the chattering Woodpecker told me.
It seemed not to matter that I was on a very important mission and that I was Pucker-Up, the Turner of Good Fortune, a most important Gnome and regarded very highly by the Kiss- Clan.
“It doesn’t matter who you are!” exclaimed the Woodpecker, puffing himself up. “You are not allowed into the Flower-Ring, not until Oberon has kissed Queen Titania into the morning. You know full and well how important that is! Why, until Oberon has given Titania a morning kiss the Sun cannot rise to wake the Mortals up on the Earth below.”
“Yes!” sang the Bluebirds from the trees. “Even we, the singing choir of Larks and Thrushes are not allowed to sing in chorus till after the Royal Morning-Kiss.”
And so I waited until Oberon, King of all Fairy-Folk, Elves, Gnomes, Nymphs and kind, had laid out the bed of Bluebell petals and then, calling his beautiful Queen Titania to lie gently on the bed, he bent to her and kissed her into the morning. As he did this I watched the golden ball of Sun rise to the heavens, lighting up the world far below and I heard the happy cries of the Mortals as they arose from their beds. Then the birds, the Bluebirds along with Larks and Thrushes all began to sing, sending up colours of blue and white to light up the sky. It was magical and I felt the joy of the Mortals below as they also began to sing.
“You may speak to his Majesty once the morning procession has finished. Join in at the front” said the Woodpecker.
I joined in the procession behind the woodland Pixies who blew trumpets and horns while giggling Fairies with tambourines, flutes and bell-triangles, mingled and danced as birds of all colours flew and sang above us. We all followed the King and Queen as they walked hand in hand between bowing trees till they reach the Grove Of Peace and sat on thrones of sun-kissed gold.
“This is Pucker-Up.” informed the Woodpecker, puffing up his green chest and extending his wings.
I walked forward and bowed low so that Oberon held up his hand. The band ceased to play, the birds falling silent as I began to speak.
“Hail, to a very sweet morning, your Majesties.” I said.
“Hail to you, Pucker-Up.” said Oberon, gesturing to the Woodpecker to fetch me a chair to sit on.
I sat before the King and Queen.
“As you will know, Your Majesties.” I began. “I am Pucker-Up, known as the Turner of Good Fortune and Speaker for the Kiss- Clan."
Both Oberon and Titania nodded, for they knew of me.
“This morning.” I continued. “I have a sad tale to report and it is of utmost importance that you help us.”
Queen Titania leaned forward, her face concerned.
“Speak on, Pucker-Up.” she said kindly.
“As you will know.” I continued. “The Kiss- Clan are the holders of the Kiss-Diamond, the light of all love for the world of the Mortals. With much sadness, this morning I have to report that the Kiss-Diamond has been stolen.”
There was silence at this news then everyone starting talking at once, concerned voices so that Oberon held his hand up for silence, his face very stern.
“Who has done this?” he demanded.
“I am not sure, your Majesty. Although one of the Kiss- called Dance-Along, found a Crow’s feather by the side of the Rosemary Bush, where the Kiss-Diamond was cushioned.” I said.
There was a silence when I said that because everyone knew the only ones to wear robes made from Crow’s feathers were the Dark-Clan, a tribe of Satyrs and Pandemonium’s, or so we all thought because no-one had actually seen a member of the Dark-Clan and having never seen one we all supposed them to be evil natives who lived to the west of World’s End.
“What shall we do? What shall we do?” began to cry the Owl, so that others took up the cry.
“We must get the Kiss-Diamond back!” exclaimed the Woodpecker, above the din.
Oberon called for silence once more.
“We have to get it back.” he said. “Else the Mortals will not be allowed to see the Moon-Queen rise in her silver ball, nor the Love-Rain fall which give the Mortals their colours. We must act right away.” he said, rising from his throne.
Everyone quickly agreed, shouting… “We must get the Kiss-Diamond back!”
Holding Titania’s hand, Oberon led the party down, through the Pearly Trees and into the Purple Grasslands of the Gophers, up and over the Ginger-Tops till we all reached the lands of the Kiss-.
The lands of the Kiss- was grey and solemn, there were no sounds of crying, just a silence of gloom.
“You see, your Majesty.” I cried, spreading out my arms. “Do you see how the land lies? That is because there is no reflection from the Sun to light up the Kiss-Diamond which makes the Love-Fruit grow. And as you know, without the Love-Fruit, the Kiss- can’t squeeze out the juice as Sky-Rain so that the juice waters the lands of the Mortals which then lights up and paints the beautiful colours of the flowers, plants and trees.” I cried.
Those who heard my words began to cry, holding their heads in their hands.
“Then, without such colours, such beauty.” I continued. “The Kiss- cannot cry Happy-Tears which become pearls, that they give to the Moon-Queen to light up her silver ball as she floats across the Mortal’s sky at night. And if the Mortals cannot see her Moon-Ball light the heavens then the Mortals cannot love each other.”
Titania listened in sadness then she too burst into tears so all around began to sob and wail even louder. Oberon put his hands in the air and called for silence, then asked if anyone had any ideas.
“What shall we do?” he asked, looking round at the throng.
“This calls for volunteers, to go to the lands of the Dark-Clan and rescue the Kiss-Diamond.” shouted the Owl.
“Yes! Yes!” all began to shout and clap their hands.
“Then I call for brave and stout hearts among you. Who will volunteer to go into the lands of the Dark-Clan and bring the Kiss-Diamond back?” asked Oberon.
For a while all became silent.
“As Turner of Good Fortune for the Kiss- I will go!” I shouted, standing up.
“But you can’t fly! You’re just a Gnome, a Kiss- and we all know Kiss- can’t fly!” exclaimed the Woodpecker, afraid to volunteer and jealous of my brave heart.
“Pucker-Up can fly on my back!” shouted the Golden-Eagle, landing on the ground beside me.
I mounted astride its back and, with a spread of its huge golden wings he took me swiftly up into the sky then hovered over the assembly.
“You see.” I called. “I am ready to go, with the Golden-Eagle carrying me! Who else will come with us?”
“I am ready to go with Pucker-Up and the Golden Eagle!” cried the Woodpecker, afraid to be left out and now puffing out its chest in a show of courage.
“Is there anyone else?” I called.
“I really think you should have another, one who has royal power and diplomacy.” said Owl, looking directly at Oberon.
“Yes, your Majesty. You must come with us!” shouted the Woodpecker.
Oberon smiled as he acknowledged those who cheered and sang in praise.
“And I shall go alongside my dear King.” said Titania, taking hold of Oberon’s hand.
“Then it is settled.” said the Woodpecker, continuing… “We will travel together, my Lord Oberon and Titania, Her Royal Highness. Then will come myself, followed by Pucker-Up, astride the Golden-Eagle.”
“Don’t be so hasty, Woodpecker.” cried the Owl, his eyes wide and round with wisdom. “Do you know how long you have got, to rescue the Kiss-Diamond before the land of the Mortals fall into a Forever-Sleep?”
“Quick!” shouted Blue-Fairy, poking her head out from the petals of the blue rose. “Ask the Dandelion-Clock how long you have got.”
Oberon stooped and picked up the Dandelion-Clock and began to blow.
The King of all the Woodland Folk blew twelve times, each puff removing some of the white seed pods till there was none left to the Dandelion’s head. Titania plucked a yellow Cowslip from the earth and taking the Dandelion from Oberon, deftly made the Cowslip into a hat, which she placed on the Dandelion’s head to keep it warm.
“We have twelve fairy hours to rescue the Kiss-Diamond.” I said, then had another thought.
“Supposing we can’t get back in time.” I asked. “What will happen if the Moon-Queen does not receive any Tear-Pearls. She will not be able to rise in the night sky so the Mortals cannot love?”
There was silence for a while as we all thought hard, then the Owl hooted so that he was heard.
“I suggest we find the brightest bird to take the place of the Kiss-Diamond, so that it reflects the Sun and lights up the fields where the Love-Fruit grows and the Kiss- can collect the Love-Fruit. They can then squeeze the fruit to rain colours down on the land of the Mortals. And they can cry Happy-Tears to make the pearls for the Moon-Queen.”

Very interesting indeed. I will have to try and remember all the names of the different characters.

Not to worry, Maudie... They get less and less as the story unfolds. Perhaps I put too much into the chapters and the words too small. I will try shortening and make the words bigger.... Thank you for commenting, it does help.
