Grandson's intro to football.

My eldest told me a story the other day and I thought it was cute. She'd taken my eldest grandson who is 8 years old to a football game with all adults in both teams, it was 'flag football' or 'touch football'.

It doesnt involve tackling the opponents, just doing maneuvers to avoid them and if you are touched you have to stop play and I'm not sure what you do after that, whether you pass the ball to the other team, have 3 touches and then pass the ball to the other team or what, I dont know, but whatever the rules my grandson was on the sideline looking enviously at them.

These men were all from my church, one African American pastor is a huge man, a martial artist and does weights etc. He told my grandson to come and play, they were careful not to run into him and the pastor let him catch him twice, but then got a shock. My grandson got him a couple of times when he didnt want to be touched, the was fast.

On one occasion when it was time to kick off, the two teams faced each other, they stared at my grandson and he stared right back. Then they started intimidating him, trying to tease him and saying stuff like, "He's too small. We'll run rings around him" and lots of other things. He stared at them for a while and then just said, "I didnt come here to talk."

What a ! Mum was proud and the guys laughed. She was beaming telling me about it all. He wants to go back again next week. He's hooked.

How wonderful..... and beyond the game, you know what I saw? I saw a young man getting attention and guidance from good men. Something that is too lacking in our societies today.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Definitely not the kind of kid who will be fooled by politicians or take any kind of crap. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing this blog. My grandson (a few years older than yours) played many sports: football, hockey, baseball etc. Great to be active! Of course what is even more helpful is having dad or grandad there to root for them!!

You're right Mrsjoe. I have plans for having 'grandpa' time with him even more when he's older, camping, fishing, hunting etc. He believes in God and is already telling his mum about the kids who dont. I'm curious where this will go. I've got his back though.

He's got attitude plus. He was quite difficult in his early years, a real rebel, but his mum has been really on top of it and it's paying off. I struggled with him in his early years also, now he comes and sits on my lap and reads me his favourite book on dangerous animals. Talks to me about the sharks and stuff. It's a good feeling when that happens.

One thing for sure is that he's a straight thinker, and surprisingly intelligent. He's pretty rough in playing but loves his books as well.

Yes, I'm really happy with him. His 3 year old brother is going down the same road, not frightened of his brother at all. I wonder how that'll turn out.

That's true, as a single dad I didnt have any time to take my kids to do regular sports and felt bad about it, but long hours in the factory, cooking dinners etc I didnt really have the time, was burnt out and felt a bit guilty about it. I guess I can help my daughter out in that area now and kind of make up for it.
