Repeat: That is what my first grandchild is.

I remember the day she was born, this tiny little creature who was not expected to live, stole my heart at first sight.

She was not beautiful as most babies are, she weighed in at 2lbs 2oz, her color was red and she looked like a wrinkled old man. Her lungs were not developed yet so she was placed in an incubator and given oxygen. She was born at 23 weeks, the doctors did not expect her to survive.

My daughter stayed with her night and day, holding her little hand and lightly caressing her every chance she could. She made sure her child had breast milk for nutrition. I couldn't be there with them everyday, but I would make the long drive from here to El Paso every weekend to be with them.

When she was 2 weeks old, I finally got to hold her. She was so tiny that I was afraid she would break. While holding her in my arms, my love for that child grew even stronger.

My granddaughter stayed in the hospital for two months and weighed in at 4lbs the day she was allowed to go home. Her doctors told my daughter that they believe human contact is what kept her alive and fighting. Had she not been there, most likely I would not be telling this story.

The hospital bill was over a million dollars, that's why she is a million dollar baby, but to me, she is priceless!

As she was growing, my daughter called her my shadow, everywhere I went, she followed me. To this day we still have a strong bond, even though I don't get to see her as often as I did when she was a child.

I can't help but feel sad when I hear women brag about having an abortion. How can a woman not feel, or understand how precious that child's life is?

Pictures are of me and my shadow at the Dinosaur Valley State Park.

You know the battle my grand daughter has fought, and we are still awaiting her arrival home. She will be 28 months old this month, and the hold up now seems to be getting the nursing staff for her home care. It is essential because as an active two year old who is walking on her own, her care would wear out her parents.
I have not blogged about her journey, but will do one someday about her victory over the severe condition with which she was born.

Yes Pat, and she is still in my thoughts and prayers. Maybe I should pray a little harder that her parents find someone so she can finally go home?

That will be a blog that I will look forward to reading.

I didn't quite share the whole experience here, I forgot to mention a few things, but they aren't as important as the love we felt for my granddaughter on the day she was born.

Obviously your granddaughter was an expected, much anticipated, and loved child.

What a lovely photo..... Happy & doing well~~

Was the cost covered by their health insurance?

WHY IS THE COST OF THE BABY LIVING EVEN A TOPIC.

THE COST OF A BABY'S LIFE CAN NOT BE MEASURED BYT ANY MATERIAL THING.

IF MY KIDS HAD COST ME AN MY WIFE 5 MILLION EACH/ WE WOULD HAVE PAID FOR IT.

WHAT WOULD THE HOSPITAL DO??? REPOSSEESS NILES GRAND DAUGHTER OR MY SON AND DAUGHTER.

I THINK THIS SHOWS HOW OUR WORLD HAS CHANGED.

I WOULD HOPE NO PARENTS HAVING CHILDREN WOULD SPEND A NANO SEC BEING CONCERNED ABOUT HW MUCH IT COSTS.

IF THEY DO , THEN THEY SHOULD REAVALUATE THEIR PRIORITIES

She was and she is loved very much.

Thank you, and that is only two of the photos my daughter took that day.

Yes, she was covered by whatever the military insurance was at that time. She would have been born at the hospital on base, but being a premature baby, she was sent to a civilian hospital in El Paso.

Thanks Maudie. My Shadow and I will have long conversations on the phone, but I'm lucky if I get to see her once a month now, but such is life.

The bill went through their military insurance. We aren't rich people here, I can't imagine trying to pay that large of a bill off.

I don't believe anyone here disagrees with you about the cost of having a baby verses how important and precious a baby's life is, but I can see how it can be a shock to look at a bill that's a million dollars. Maybe I should have mentioned the bill was covered by the military in the first place and that question would not have been asked. My fault.

Nile, with all due respect, you're not at fault. that topic should never be breached, i see ones making the comments and don't shock,e. but my surprise is WHEN DDI THE COST OF HAVEING A BABY ENTER INTO ANYTHING. THIS IS NOT A CAR OR A HOUSE.

IT IS GODS CHILDREN HE SENT US.

PLEASE NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR UR POST THE WAY IT WAS POSTED.

I AM STILL SURPRISED ANYONE COULD MENTION THE COST OF A BABY'S BIRTH.

HOWEVER, I ALSO AM SHOCKED AT THE CALLOUSNESS OF THE SAME MINDSETS ABOUT ABORTION.

THE DAYS WILL END ... TIME WILL BE ETERNAL
