Just in case>
After reading Sewg2000's blog, it brought to mind an article I read about Bill Gates and why he is buying up farmland here in the US. Not just an article, but there was also a video of him explaining to the reporter of why he was doing this.

The video was hard to watch. Gates never sat still, he flailed his arms and wiggled in his seat as he was responding to the interviewer. My thought was, "What is that man taking to cause him to wiggle like a hyperactive 5 year old?" I'm serious, it was very hard to watch the whole thing.

His response was very clear that it was about the money, fake meat is going to make him richer, so he thinks. Buying farmland only to control what the people here are going to be allowed to eat. There was another video in the article that showed how they produce and grow the fake meat in a lab. I don't know about you, but there is no way I'm going to eat that garbage.

So how would he control what he calls the wealthy country's meat supply? He wants to rid those countries of their cattle and only allow them lab grown meats. Now the poorer countries would have real meat, but it would be genetically modified. Isn't that sweet of him? He's going to take care of poor people in poor countries. Yeah, like he did with those vaccines he gave to children in India and Africa.

The video about the fake meat shows it looks like real meat, but the texture and the taste, not even close to real beef, but they said you'll get used to it.

Oh, and this isn't the Beyond Beef you see in the markets now, it is not made from veggies, it's made with chemicals. Would you eat it?

Nope. We tried the veggie based meat one time.... my budget was very limited, and the store had it on sale, far cheaper than the regular hamburger.
We dressed it up with all the trimmings, but none of us liked it at all.
It may have improved since then, but I still don't buy it. I suppose it would be an okay substitute if someone couldn't or really didn't want to eat regular meat.
But the lab kind? No.

You are such a brave soul, I wouldn't eat it if someone bought it and cooked it for me. I heard it was soybean based and I don't eat soy at all. Tried the soy milk when it first came out, it had an oily film and really tasted nasty! I can only imagine what the meat tasted like. amp;

As ranchers who produce organically raised Angus BEEF FFFFFFFFFFFFF-NO FAKE meat on our table and a COLD DAY IN HADES before it would be. For years our Beef went for Kosher Beef until the government shut them down. What little bit of meat I Buy in the stores one can clearly see it is REAL MEAT. Allow the vegans their choice but DO NOT try that shit with US.

I'm with you on that!! I'd starve before I ate that crap!! Now I wish I had purchased more land when I bought this place, I'd have me a few head of cattle of my own. I did order some more chicks which should be here the second week of May. I just read about some chicken plant that was shut down and they culled over 5,000 birds and fired all the workers. Keep watch on that, we might be seeing more and more of our food plants shutting down. Expect egg prices to skyrocket.

I would never buy meat that wasn't the real thing, no way. I buy all my meat from the local butcher.

But I have eaten burgers and the odd nugget now and then, guilty as charged lol.

How much money does Bill Gates need. ??? Seems like with some rich people the more they have the more they want.

Nileyears replies on 4/29/2022 2:58 pm:
I'll admit I ate like that 25 years ago, but changed my diet as I discovered how bad the food was and what it does to our health. Obesity and diabetes are two great reasons to not eat garbage food.

In my opinion, I don't believe it's the money, I believe he's on a power trip and wants to control the world population through what we eat and vaccines. Looking at pics of Gates, he's not a picture of health, he looks sickly to me. That video I watched him in was really freaky!

Hi Nile. The answer to your question is 'yes', I would give 'fake' meat a go. As for the humble soybean, it was known as the 'poor man's meat' in Asia (protein content higher than milk without the saturated fat or cholesterol). Having lived my early childhood in Indonesia, we often ate tofu (soybean curd) and tempe (fermented soybeans) so I'm quite familiar with the product. As a child, I preferred tempe over meat (as told by my mother). Tofu can be very bland but does soak up any flavours added to it. Last night I enjoyed a meal of gado-gado (Indonesian dish of steamed vegetables with peanut sauce) and fried tofu and tempe which I thoroughly enjoyed (tempe soaked in tamarind water before frying is my favourite way of eating it). Would just like to add I also dislike the taste of plain soymilk, similar reaction to you but strawberry flavoured soy milk I love (prefer rice milk as its flavour is reasonably mild).

Nileyears replies on 4/30/2022 8:03 am:
Hi Lil. If you already eat tofu and soy, why bother with a lab produced meat? You aren't going to get the essential nutrients that red meat provides, unless of course they plan on injecting it into the fake meat, but that might not be cost effective. As far as drinking flavored soy drinks, or any flavored drink, some I've tried just taste artificial to me. Now I do drink oat milk, it isn't oily, it has a nice creamy texture and is very close to the taste of whole milk, but you do have to shake it before you have a glass. Another thing about soy is you don't know if you are getting a GMO, or organic soy. Here in the US the majority of soy grown is genetically modified, it's been years since I read the article about it, but if I recall, it's 90% GMO, might be higher.
Then I think about Sewg2000 (Sandy) and her being severely anemic, would fake meat provide the same amino acids, iron and vitamins as real meat, or would we all suffer the same fate and become sickly? I've already been through being anemic, it's not a good feeling. I eat red meat at least once a week, the other days are fish and chicken, I don't care much for pork, but on occasion I will eat bacon.

The Impossible Burger contains:

Water, Soy Protein Concentrate, Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, 2% or less of: Potato Protein, Methylcellulose, Yeast Extract, Cultured Dextrose, Food Starch Modified, Soy Leghemoglobin, Salt, Soy Protein Isolate, Mixed Tocopherols (Vitamin E), Zinc Gluconate, Thiamine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B1), Sodium Ascorbate (Vitamin C), Niacin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Vitamin B12.

Other than water, the main ingredient is soy protein concentrate. In and of themselves, soybeans are perfectly healthy, but soy protein concentrate is heavily processed, which means many of the benefits of the raw food are lost.

For example, raw soybeans provide a great deal of calcium, vitamin C, vitamin B-6, iron and magnesium, but Impossible Foods fortifies its burgers with vitamins and minerals, likely to make up for the lost nutrients during processing.
beyond-burger-cross-section

The Beyond Meat Burger.
Beyond Meat
What is the Beyond Burger made of?

Just like the Impossible Burger, the Beyond Burger has a long list of ingredients. It contains:

Water, Pea Protein Isolate, Expeller-Pressed Canola Oil, Refined Coconut Oil, Contains 2% or less of the following: Cellulose from Bamboo, Methylcellulose, Potato Starch, Natural Flavor, Maltodextrin, Yeast Extract, Salt, Sunflower Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Dried Yeast, Gum Arabic, Citrus Extract (to protect quality), Ascorbic Acid (to maintain color), Beet Juice Extract (for color), Acetic Acid, Succinic Acid, Modified Food Starch, Annatto (for color).

In terms of ingredients, the two burgers are pretty similar, the exception being the main protein source. Beyond Meat uses pea protein instead of soy protein, and there's no soy leghemoglobin, which is Impossible's key ingredient that makes the burger "bleed."

Also, Beyond Burger's red color comes from beet extract, rather than heme from the leghemoglobin like in the Impossible patty.

Yep, the Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat Burger are both vegan -- neither contains any animal products of by-products.

In a statement to CNET, Impossible Foods confirmed that its burger is vegan but noted it has used animal testing to evaluate the safety of its heme protein (also called soy leghemoglobin).

The bottom line is that both of these companies have created a "burger" in a lab, made from only plant products and designed to emulate the taste and texture of real beef. Your comfort level with that depends on your stance on food engineering (and how picky you are about beef, if you do eat it).
Beyond Meat veggie sausages

Beyond Meat offers sausages and "beef" crumbles in addition to the Beyond Burger.
Beyond Meat

A few things might influence your opinion on which burger is healthier:

The Impossible Burger contains mostly organic ingredients, while the Beyond Burger doesn't
The Beyond Burger is strictly non-GMO, whereas Impossible Foods recently faced backlash about using genetically modified ingredients that contain the pesticide glyphosate
The Impossible Burger is fortified with more vitamins and minerals than the Beyond Burger

From a numbers standpoint, both burgers hit around the same marks: Per serving they both have:

Just under 300 calories
About 20 grams of protein
Nearly 400 milligrams of sodium -- so be mindful if you're watching your salt intake.

The Beyond Meat burger has 20 grams of fat to Impossible Burger's 14. You can see the full nutritional values for the Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat for more info.

Well, the Impossible Burger evidently tastes enough like real beef to gross out vegetarians, and food scientists at Impossible Foods say the burger can substitute for ground beef in any recipe.

The Beyond Burger is described as having a somewhat coconut-y aftertaste, but the majority of reviews on Amazon come from happy customers who are impressed by proximity to real beef.

Both burgers are generally described as resembling beef more than traditional veggie burger patties (like a Boca Burger). However, the taste and texture of both burgers may not be close enough for some beef lovers.

In our blind taste test of the two burgers, CNET staff members noted some pretty distinct differences -- check out what they had to say about the Impossible Burger and the Beyond Burger.

It's worth pointing out that no Impossible Burger or Beyond Meat Burger is the same. Restaurants use the patties from either brand to create an faux-meat burger option that fits with their menu, so the patties are the common denominator, but the flavor of the entire burger is unique to each restaurant.
.........................................................................................................................................

***I think its all the additives that make me hesitate to bother with these products.

Although some may be concerned about Bill Gates buying agricultural land, I would be far more concerned with how much land in N. America, and how many processing plants are being bought up by foreign countries.

When we protested eating some of the foods my Mother made, she would just respond with, "EAT.... You've never been hungry."

Some of you may remember Witchy who grew up in Holland during the Second World War. She related times they had to dig up and eat grass roots etc. in order to stay alive. Never say, "Never....."

Sorry this is such a long comment~~~

Nileyears replies on 4/30/2022 9:24 am:
LOL Rocket, no problem!

I'm with you, too many ingredients. I like to look at a package that says, "Contains beef, no hormones, no antibiotics, grass fed from start to finish." Isn't it strange how cows can get fat just from eating grass? Horses, sheep and the rest of the grazers are the same.

My sister was a vegan and for years she would tell me I was going to die from cancer, she condemned everything I ate. I do eat my veggies, but stick to what I grow and if I have to buy them, I buy organic. Eating foods sprayed with insecticides and weed killer is something I avoid. (Roundup ready GMO crops) My sister didn't, she said it didn't make a difference. Did all those chemicals give here cancer? Maybe, but I guess we'll never know.

Thanks for pointing out how processing plants are being bought up by foreign countries, a lot of people don't know about that. Yes, I am concerned about it, but being unable to do anything about it leaves me and others helpless to do anything to stop it. The majority of people do not have the capabilities of raising and growing their own food which makes them dependent on these companies. Shut them down and people will do without.

Coming from somewhat of a poor family, there were many nights that I went to bed hungry. Our meals consisted of beans most of the time, beans and cornbread. I only like one kind of bean, it's the pinto bean, the other beans make me gag. My Mom would say eat, or go to bed... I went to bed. I was a skinny kid, LOL. Breakfast was always oatmeal, I loved it, but my sister would gag from that. No wonder I loved being on my Grandpa's farm, better variety of food.

Witchy sounds familiar, but I don't know much about her. I could do some foraging around here if I got hungry enough and it would all be nature's foods.

It's said that starving people will eat anything to survive, even other humans and we know that has happened. The thought of that makes me gag though, I couldn't do it, I'd rather chew on tree bark.

I don't like killing my birds when their laying days are over, but I have and will probably have to do so in the future. I was taught on my Grandpa's farm as a kid on how to kill and clean a bird. Another reason I do my best not to make pets out of my chickens. Some birds just get so friendly though and follow me around like a pet dog. That destroys the tough side of me, I can't cull a pet.

Niles we always grain fed the calf we planned to butcher for a short while after it was weaned from the cow resulting in the cut of beef being slightly marblized and very tender.
Those grass fed critters get old and tuff by the time they weigh out much---like trying to eat shoe leather. LOLOL
The better grade steer calves might dress out 70% at best
A better grade heiffer calf woud dress out about 55%

Nileyears replies on 4/30/2022 5:03 pm:
Well Tx, all I eat is grass fed Black Angus. Some cuts are leaner which make them a tougher cut of meat, but cuts such as the Ribeye is always more tender. Personally, I like the strip steaks, not too fat not too lean.

I only ordered 15 birds to start, after awhile I'll be incubating the eggs to grow my flock.

Sorry, I mentioned I prefer rice milk over soy milk - think I had Asia and rice on the brain! I meant oat milk - rice milk's too watery and doesn't pack as many quality nutrients found in oat or dairy milk. The soy products (including milk) I buy use only non-genetically modified soy beans. I'm not wholly vegetarian, let alone vegan, but I do like 'clean' eating & living.

As said, am open to trying 'fake' meat. Thanks Rocket for the nutrition rundown on the two vegan burgers. I wouldn't be daunted, and with further development, their nutritional content could become premium quality (?).

I'm interested in the current development of cultured/cell based meat, i.e.
meat that is grown from a tissue biopsy of cells taken from an animal where it's then cultivated in a controlled environment that mimics the environment of an animal. This technology enables the production and consumption of meat and fish without the need for any animals to be slaughtered. Cultured meat is also considered to be an environmentally friendly alternative to factory farming, which is a major producer of greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient pollution. [quoted courtesy Cell Based Tech] Quite exciting because not everyone can access grass fed beef. A Brave New World eh?

Nileyears replies on 5/1/2022 8:32 am:
I know what you mean by watery, LOL, if I wanted watery milk, I'd be drinking that 1% milk and with that, I might as well have a glass of water instead. Oat milk is really good and my granddaughter was shocked when she saw it in my fridge, she loves it!

I look at the fake meat for what it is, fake. As you mentioned, you eat only non-GMO soy, but would that be the case with the fake meat? Would they even label it as such, or would they avoid putting the source of soy on the label?

Speaking of meat. There used to be a gigantic flea market up in Forest Hill. One section had people selling chickens , eggs, ducks, geese & goats.

These foreignors ( orientals ) would come in.-------buy the goats -----ducks -----geese-----tie them up-----load them in the trunk of their cars and take them to a place south of town and butcher them after paying a fee.
There was never enough ducks & goats to fill the demand.

I always think of that when I hear how covide started at the China market.. LOLOL

I never went to the Forest Hill flea market, the one I always liked was Trader's Village. I haven't been there in years. I could find some really unique items up there, gosh, it must be huge now compared to what it was years ago, and it was big way back when.

I sell birds at a flea market that's only 14 miles from here, don't even have to pay to set up a booth. I park in the parking lot, display the birds and they are sold out in 30 minutes. I pack up the cages and go home. I get rid of a lot of roosters that way.

Well, as long as no one is selling bats, I don't think you have to worry. LOL

Darter mentiond clover interspersed wit other forage for cattle.
Here in Texas we had to be very careful and NOT let cattle into a pasture where thereis fresh clover in early morning when there is dew on plants.

The combination of succulent clover & moisture will cause cows to bloat up like a balloon. LOL
They can get down & never get up unless a hose with soapy water is inserted. LOL

Sorry Tx, I didn't look for new comments on this blog, until now.

You just missed Antique Alley, it took place a couple weekends ago. I think the next one is in September? I know there are two a year and April and September are usually the months they are held in.

My Mom used to do the same with milk, with 7 kids and 4 being growing boys, she had to cut costs someway or another.

LOL, did they need that remedy or did they just look like they needed that remedy? Some of those beer bellies look like they are going to pop at any given moment.
