A Strange Thing Happened On My Birthday

It was my birthday days ago and as usual, I checked my e-mail. I noticed a message from my old boyfriend. We dated 7 years decades ago. We corresponded briefly years ago but nothing since then. Imagine my shock seeing his name appear. I then read the message. He asked how I was, where I was and if I was busy. Then he proceeded to say he had a favor to ask me. He signed it with his full name.

I was suspicious. Why would my ex boyfriend be asking for a favor? Why would my ex boyfriend who I had shared intimate times with, end the message with his full name? Why did he not even put my name on the message in his salutation? Red flags popped up all over the place.

I responded to his message, which was not at the e-mail address I used for him years ago. I asked what the favor was and for the name of his parents. I admitted it shocked me to hear from him and to be asked a favor when he has a wife, brothers, etc.

He responded that he was traveling and wanted to buy a Google gift card for his niece, who shared the same birthday. He wanted $200 in $100 denominations. He asked me to scratch it and give him the PIN number and to take a pic of it. He said he would pay me back once back in town. I wasn't born yesterday, as I turned 61 lol. NO WAY would my ex boyfriend ask this of me. I said to him that I am busy due to my birthday and that he should ask his brothers or wife. I asked for his parents' name again. He responded that his account had been hacked and to ignore the whole thing.

I then thought to myself that it is the hacker saying about the hacking. I wrote the e-mail address of my ex boyfriend and he responded saying others were upset about all this and he is trying to catch the guy. He said something that made me know it's him not that I had doubts.

Anyhow besides being beware of anyone bearing gifts, beware of anyone asking for gifts.

I missed all of you, well almost all.

Anyone else have such a thing happen to them?

NO MATTER WHAT, YOU MUST NEVER RESPOND TO THAT KIND OF MAIL. NEVER SEND ANY MONEY. YOU WERE WISE TO BE SO CAREFUL. AND HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY.

That's a new one for me, but years ago my son had a car to sell. He put it on Craig's List, and soon got a response. The person said he was out of state at the moment, but would send my son a money order that was for quite a bit more than the car, and my son was to deposit it and then give the extra money to the person who came to pick the car up for him.
According to the research we did, the scam is that the money order is fake, but by the time it is discovered, the car would be gone, the extra money would be gone, and my son would be liable for the fake money order.
There are so many scams these days, it's impossible to trust people you don't know.

I always laugh at these goofy con requests for money or my car or my earrings, or whatever they are trying to con me out of, then DELETE, delete, delete!

Yes, something like that happened to me.
I got an email from a friend's email account asking for money.
I suspected someone had hacked into that account and sent a similar request to everyone in the contact list.
So I asked the sender to tell me where he had met my sister.
I don't have a sister.
He responded with a nasty note taking me to task for not be a trusting person.

Thanks for the replies. Pat, when you started telling about the money order, I knew the rest. Someone tried to pull that on me long ago. Rentier, that was smart of you. Hackers are getting really clever these days. I hope nobody falls for these con jobs but sadly some do.

Elaine I think that CRA scam thing seems to have died out. After CBC did that special on it and went to India to try and track down the scammers I never heard anything after that. The sad part of it was that seniors and newcomers to Canada were the ones being targeted. One guy got taken for $100,000. He was an immigrant. So sad that we have to put up with this nonsense now. For that reason I have call display on my phone so I don't have to answer all the phone calls.

Yes but this was weird since it was my ex boyfriend's name and the fact it was on my birthday, which was an odd coincidence. Remember also, this was sent to my e-mail not done on the phone.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. ET, yes asking for money from a guy who I haven't spoken to in years added with the rest, caused many red flags. People should be cautious and make sure the person they think wrote them is the actual sender. In most cases, they aren't.

Elaine the odd time I get weird emails from individuals and have no clue who they are. I usually check their email and if it a big long one with weird names in it then for sure it is someone trying to scam something.

I agree but this one was short and had my ex boyfriend's name on it.
