PURCHASING A NEW TV - DECISIONS, DECISIONS

Life used to be much easier. For TV sets, you had to choose between black and white or color. That was it. TVs are big in my family. My siblings and I bought our parents their first color TV for their 25th anniversary. My sister and I bought one for them for their 50th anniversary. I bought my sister a TV for a major birthday and she did the same for me for my 50th. Now I know most people don't like to replace things until they are broken but I do have a weakness for electronics. Some replace their cars and I get my TV replaced.

There are so many options out there today. HDR is the new big thing but there is OLED and Ultra High Definiton Premium, 4K and even some can play 3D. When my sister got her last one, it had active 3D and I said when I get my next one, it will have that. Now I am not sure. Seems 3D TV sets are no longer being manufactured after 2016. I now have a choice of getting last year's models with 3D or forget about 3D altogether. I am torn. I am not in love with the active glasses I had to wear to watch 3D on my sister's TV but the ones I am considering are passive so the glasses are more comfortable. I am not sure where I would get 3D content except for buying 3D DVDs and having to buy a DVD player compatible to play them.

As far as OLED, it seems it's the best but my bed is probably 10 feet from where the TV would be placed. Based on my research thus far, I would either not see the difference or have to sit by my desktop to see the TV close enough for it to matter.

Please let me know your experiences with the new types of TV sets. Thanks.

I haven't had a TV in a few years. I broke down and bought one last year but ended up giving it to my son. I do have a player for DVD movies but it is usually to see which is better, the book or the movie.

Just saying "Hi", but I can't help you any. I don't understand all the TV stuff, and haven't bothered to research any of it.
Our TV is a 30 something inch that we got from our daughter when they got a bigger one. It is HD, I do know that much, but when I called DISH to ask about HD programming, the young man told me that at that time, there wasn't enough of it to warrant the increased price since we didn't use any of the movie channels. That was several years ago.
I guess we will have to do some research when this one finally breaks down, won't we?

I have no clue, my youngest daughter gave me her Vizio big screen TV. I like it ok, but it's not like I sit in front of it, or watch it all day, no cable, or satellite.

I have a 40 inch Sony which I do love but I must admit I do want the HDR which is the new big thing. 3D I always wanted to have and I predict it will make a comeback without needing glasses. I wouldn't get a Samsung or other model without the new technology or I would just stick to my Sony, which I may do. I do thank you for your comment

Thanks for your suggestion. I heard of TCL recently but I don't really know much about the company. They may be worth checking out. I wish I could find an OLED TV with 3D and it being cheaper and under 50". That doesn't exist right now.

Hi back, Pat. You never know. Your daughter may get another TV and give you the bigger one she last purchased.

I am not surprised to hear you don't watch much TV, Rae. You enjoy being out and riding your horse, which is great. Thanks for trying to help me.

Yep, I do enjoy being outside, but haven't ridden my horse for a few months. I'm finally getting strong enough to work with him again, but it's taking some time.

Sorry I wasn't much help, but I do enjoy this Vizio, can't believe all the details I see in my old movies that I missed before.

It is amazing how a great TV can make a difference in the details you see. I used to think that TV is TV but clearly that isn't the case. Thanks Rae.

Rather than living on the leading edge, the prices come down pretty quick when something new comes out. No matter what ya get it may be obsolete soon anyway. Last TV I watched was the Academy Awards when Faye Dunaway.. you know
YouTube, every day. My giant 17" fits in my lap pretty well. I did buy a TV for 50 bucks that is pretty nice, not so smart though.. but there she sits..

Hi Elaine......I don't have a TV in my bedroom. I have to wear glasses to watch TV and knowing me I would probably nod off with y glasses hanging on my nose. I bought mine a few years ago and it is a 30" TV. I guess it has HD as I do get that.with my PVR. I am not into big TV's and the size I have suits me fine. I have a friend whose place is considerable smaller than mine and I think she bought a 50" TV a while ago and loves it. Hope all is well with you.

I wouldn't consider anything under 4K for a new TV. My TV is great but doesn't have the new and improved technologies. In Canada, our prices are much higher than what you are quoting Liszt but I do appreciate your input. Thanks for your comment.

Many people I know don't have cable. I know not everyone cares about their TVs. For some it's their cars. For me, it's electronics. Thanks for replying to my post, TxJW2.

You do know how to live inexpensively. Good for you. I wish I was that way but I am not. Thanks for your comment.

Nice to hear from you, Shartaun03. For me, it's not the size of the TV. I have a 40" one now and I am happy with the size. In fact, getting one over 50" requires me to move some furniture. The problem is I keep reading that OLED is best and the smallest OLED is 55". I wish they would make ones 50" tops. Thanks for your response.
