IT'S OVER

I had my colonoscopy yesterday and they found 2 polyps. If my post gets even 1 person to have a colonoscopy, it will be worth it. Most colon cancers begin with a polyps. Before they used to do major surgery to remove a polyps but now there is a colonoscopy. Your risk of colon cancer increases at age 50 but some younger have had it. Katie Couric's first husband died of it in his 40s. Depending on your family history, you will need it at different intervals. There are some risks associated with doing it so of course, it's up to you. Those risks are rare but may increase at age 65. So it's something to speak to your doctor about.

Some polyps are the type that could lead to cancer and some are not. I have no idea which were removed yesterday but I will once I get the report. Those that have cancer potential could have turned to cancer unless removed. Removal during a colonoscopy is no big deal. I slept through it all. I once was awake during a colonoscopy (or most of it) for some reason but out of all the ones I have had, that happened only once. Usually you sleep and don't feel a thing.

Remember one thing if you feel it isn't worth having: COLON CANCER CAN KILL YOU!!!! It is one of the top cancers that people have died from. It is PREVENTABLE in most cases by having a colonoscopy. Men, it DOESN'T make you gay to have something up your ass. It isn't sexual. It is for your health.

I forgot to add that MrsJoe (Pat) said that her friend didn't go for one. Later her friend thought she had hemorrhoids but instead, unfortunately, it was cancer. The same happened to a cousin of mine that died of colon cancer. My dad died of colon cancer but that was 16.5 years ago. At that time, we didn't realize how important it was to do a colonoscopy or he would have had one. Please don't be like Pat's friend or my cousin, who should have known better.

It's About 3000 here without Insurance which is way to expensive - There is a
Procedure that is only 600- and it tests part of the colon plus you can get a fecal
Blood test with it- so their are options for those without Insurance
I am glad I am not a US citizen when I hear that. I didn't pay a cent for mine. For the record, my dad had one fecal test and they said he had hemorrhoids. He didn't, he had cancer and died. I don't trust those tests. Perhaps there are more accurate ones now.

I guess with the cost, one has to weigh things more and decide one"s priorities. Some people are covered by insurance at work or elsewhere, I would assume. I pay for private health insurance to cover things our health plan doesn't cover.

I had my third Colonoscopy last fall. The worst part was the prep the day before. I slept through the procedure. They found 3 small benign polyps.

I saw Katie Couric do hers on tv in front of God and everybody and described it as she got it. I figured if she could so that I could do it asleep.

My brother has had 2 or 3 Colonoscopies also.

Our Grandfather and Uncle both had Colon Cancer and died from it so we definitely will do it again in 3 years this time, the Dr. said that is what we should do instead of 5 years. Possibly because of our age?

A routine colonoscopy on Friday the 13th of Jan, 2012, uncovered a rarity in me - Stage III a neuro-endocrine carcinoma and I had to have immediate surgery. I too, had a history of polyps and this one was huge. I had the colon resection a few days later, followed by the chemo and radiation things. I have had three or four colonoscopies since then and am okay so far.

Take it seriously. It will kill you if you don't.

Fossil, I am glad you're ok. What you said does concern me. You had regular colonoscopies and had many polyps before and still got cancer? How often did you have colonoscopies? Here if you have multiple ones, you get tested again in 3 years. The aim is to catch things before they become cancer.

I can't talk about the USA, but here it is 5 years if there is a family history as you have. With multiple polyps like your 3 benign ones, it would be 3 years like with me. It isn't due to your age. Thanks for your comment, Ann.

The fact that so many have had polyps removed, shows just how important it is to do a colonoscopy. Thanks Dan.

Wow, here you can't have it done annually, I am glad you get tested, Bumpkin. Thanks for your response.

I just noticed MrsJoe's comment disappeared. I don't know how or why that happens but if any comments disappear, I didn't delete them.

I take it very seriously. I have been doing it since my dad died in 1999. My young age? Thanks so much, Roxy.
