I WAS SHOCKED

I am going out today to get a haircut and afterwards out for dinner. We had planned on going to a Japanese restaurant in our area for dinner. When my sister told someone at work, the woman she spoke to said it has had health violations so I decided to look it up. In the area we live, there are food inspections carried out and the results are made public on the internet. In addition, the restaurants have the results posted on their doors, so consumers will know if they passed or failed their inspection. Some offences are major and others not that bad. This restaurant had many dangerous ones and in fact, the inspectors removed some of the food, which I have never seen in any prior report.

The point of this post is that it's best to check if the restaurants you eat out at are safe. I don't know if the USA has such inspections that are made public but if you do, it is wise to check that the place you will eat at doesn't have contamination issues like where we had planned to eat. Needless to say, we will be dining elsewhere. Yes, I did check the record of the restaurant we will be going to for dinner.

Hi Shuel,

I hope that you and your sister had a delicious and food safe dinner.

Is the site you used to check out the various restaurants specific to Toronto, or does it cover all of Ontario?

Thanks rocket. We did have a nice dinner elsewhere. There is the same thing for Toronto, but the region where I live has a separate department that only checks establisments in my area.

This establishment had many issues including cross contamination. Thanks for your comment, RosesLady.

I like that. The more the public is aware of the restaurants that have filthy conditions, the more incentive the restaurants will have to fix things up in order to not lose business. Thanks for that information, Bob.

There have been a couple of restaurants in my neighborhood which I thought were undesirable. First thing I notice if they are cleaning outside the restaurant. If it is dirty outside guaranteed to be filthy inside at east in my estimation.

Hi Elaine: Once I was on a first date with a man and we went to a restaurant in Toronto for dinner. The date seemed to be going very well, but halfway through the meal I happened to glance across the room and saw a mouse running right across the floor and it was heading right for our table. I screamed so loud you would not believe and had my feet up on the seat and the mouse was right under our table and the chef was chasing it out with a broom. My date who was basically a stranger was visibly shaken too and had to practically carry me out of there.

Interesting way of looking at things, Shartaun03. I never really pay that much attention to the outside unless something makes me notice it. Thanks for your comment.

Hi bijou. OMG, given I live in a suburb of Toronto, I would like to know which restaurant it was. What a horrible experience. Thanks for sharing that.

Thinking about it, have you looked it up to see if it passed health inspections? I would be curious to know.

It was years ago at some restaurant in the Annex, but can't remember the name.

I just thought of a joke for this blog...

Customer: "Waiter, what's this fly doing in my soup?"

Waiter: "I believe that's the back stroke."

Elaine, did you see that movie Victor/Victoria with Julie Andrews? The funniest scene ever was when Julie Andrews brings a cockroach in her purse to a restaurant. She eats a huge meal, then plans to put the cockroach on her plate to try to get out of paying the bill. I've never laughed so hard to see the chaos that ensued in that restaurant when the cockroach got loose.

My sister-in-law very often checks out the restaurant bathroom before they are seated. If it's clean and tidy, they will stay.

We should have done that years ago when we had breakfast in a restaurant. I did go to the bathroom there. Although the room was kind of okay, it was right next to the kitchen. By the afternoon, we were painfully aware that someone who prepared our food had not washed their hands..... confirmed from testing by our doctor and reported to the health department.

Sighhhhh.........

I'm sorry, Maggie. I was just kidding, given what happened at that restaurant. I have never been to NB but I am sure it's a great place to live.

Oh my, I don't like the sound of that. I am glad there are health inspectors checking out restaurants. Thanks rocket.
