HOW INTELLIGENT ARE YOU? One of the ways intelligence is measured is by IQ tests. Mensa membership is based on how high a score one achieves on their test. How accurate are they? I read this: "IQ tests are misleading because they do not accurately reflect intelligence, according to a study which found that a minimum of three different exams are needed to measure someone's brainpower." I have done well on IQ tests but honestly, I feel they are biased. I feel that someone who didn't get exposed to certain things would do poorly, regardless of how smart they are. What do you think? I think in the case of a fool, one exposes oneself by saying foolish things. I remember in school, we had to take IQ tests for them to measure our intelligence. Do you have faith that IQ tests truly measures how bright we are? Thanks for your comment, Knxldy.  Elaine Shuel

I've always felt that intelligence could not truly be rated by isolated testing. It reminds me of the joke about how to empty a bathtub. People were asked what they would use and how they would accomplish the task. Without guidance, from containers standing by, most selected the bucket rather than the cup or tablespoon. Of course the fastest way to get the job done was to pull the plug. I generally prefer folks who have life/street smarts (common sense) than those who got their knowledge (and degrees) from books.

I have no idea if schools still use them, to determine a person's intelligence. I agree there are those that are educated that aren't very bright. I have also met some people that I feel are extremely intelligent that never graduated. Thanks for your comment, Pat. Elaine Shuel

They are still used. My grandchildren were or will be tested. I'm not sure if all are or just those who want advanced placement classes. One grand child has problems stemming from complications at birth. He has had all sorts of evaluations to determine the best program for his needs. Thinnest for most though is a bit less organized. whether it be school or the job market a persons either succeeds or doesn't. No numbers needed. Spiritwoman ^i^

Both. When I did voc rehab evaluations we used a combo. IQ, life skills evaluation, academic functioning level including screening for learning disabilities, interests, aptitude psychological issues and personality to identify the areas the individual was best suited for. Unfortunately this type of evaluation is only available privately and is quite costly but gives a great portrait of where the individual is at present, what they need to work on and identifies strengths to build on. We would use the test info in combination with the individuals health, personal history, education and work history to determine the best approach to get them employed. Sadly the "accepted" instruments have not kept up with social changes. Some of them are the same ones used when I was a graduate student! Spiritwoman ^i^
