HOW MANY OF YOU WILL ADMIT TO HAVING OCD?

For those that don't know it, OCD is obsessive compulsive disorder. There are many degrees to it, some minor nuisances and others life altering. I have to admit that I have OCD but I'm in the former category. I went to a class to try to change it but found out that millions of people have OCD but don't know it. Further, if it doesn't affect your day-to-day life significantly enough, it's not actually considered having a disorder. So, technically I don't have OCD.

When I first joined this site and said I'm addicted to it, I wasn't being funny. I was spending so much time here that it really was too much. It's ok to come to a site you like from time-to-time but I was here too much. You really CAN get too much of a good thing. I recently discovered a game called Words With Friends and now I'm addicted to that. That's helped me not spend my life on this site and at least it's a brain game. I have always enjoyed learning. So I've traded one addiction for another.

Anyhow there are cases of OCD that are really extreme and life altering. When I took that class they gave us a questionnaire to determine how severe a case we have. I had the least amount of OCD in my class and most of them were taking pills for it. I don't take a thing for it. I do find that stress makes it worse. it often runs in families. Many don't realize they have it. They clean the house too much for they work too much (yes being a workaholic CAN be OCD, I found out). Basically it means you feel the need to do something that you don't particularly enjoy doing but if you don't do it, you get anxiety. I don't think playing Words With Friends is part of that since I do enjoy it. That is an addiction not an obsession.

Anyhow, do you have OCD? Do you feel the need to recheck things and have any rituals that if you don't do them, you would feel stress?

OCD can become completely disabling. One of my mother's aunts was hospitalized a couple of times due to this.

The tendencies run rampant on my mother's side of the family. ADD on my dad's. Just imagine all of this coexisting and you have a family dinner with my family.

Yes that would be an interesting gathering. I never heard of anyone hospitalized for OCD. I'm sorry to hear that, Spirit.

Hi Elaine, good to see you. I don't think I have OCD, well I hope not anyway. I guess we all have to do things that we don't particularly enjoy doing. For Instance I hate cleaning the oven and only do so when I feel like it, which is seldom lol. I actually bought oven cleaner yesterday, so maybe I might clean the cursed thing again some day soon

Nice to see you too, Maura. Doing things that need to be done isn't OCD. It's doing rituals and other things like rechecking.

Hi Elaine: I don't think I have it, but when I find a person I really like, or something I like to eat, or some activity that I like to do, I think I might get a little carried away. For some reason wearing a nice pair or shoes makes me feel better. One time I counted my shoes and I think there were about 50 pairs in the closet. Now I'm down to about 15 pairs and usually just wear the same few over and over, so I must be getting better.

That happens to most people, I think. 50 pairs of shoes. Wow, that is a lot. Thanks bijou.

OCD can manifest itself in many small or big ways.

There was a tv series called Monk in which the detective has a great many things that he's OCD about.

Every once in awhile I find myself mentally counting when I brush my teeth.....LOL. Since I don't do it all the time and can stop it, I don't think it's OCD ... like a gal pal who usually locks her door when going out, walks about 4 feet away and always has to go back and check the door.

Your friend that locks her door and goes back has OCD, assuming it wasn't a one time thing. Again the symptoms deviate. Everyone is different so the disorder presents itself in various ways. Thanks for your input, Rocket.
