AM I A SENIOR?

I put up a post about 3 sisters in their 90s and someone implied that I'm not a senior. Does that mean I should leave and come back in 3 years (I'm turning 57 in Sept)? 8 years? What age is considered a senior to you?

It used to be easy to know what age a senior is. It was legally 65. Now it varies depending on the organization. At some places it's 50 and other places 55, 60 or 65 the senior discount is offered.

Yes, the definition of what age makes you a senior is sure flexible these days... LOLOLOL.

I don't mind being called a senior, but for some reason, I really dislike the term 'elderly'!!

Elderly is not a word I've heard for a very long time. It didn't pertain to me when I did hear it. That's not a flattering word and actually I've never used it. There is nobody on this site that I've thought of as elderly. Thanks for your comment, Rocket.

At the movie theater I go to, I started getting the senior rate at 55, ( the kids 12 and under price ) certain restaurants will also give a discount for 55 and up, but most consider 65 a senior citizen. So if that's the case, I am not one either and I'll be back in a couple years and two and a half months. My B Day is in September also.

That's why my handle is Nileyears, I'm somewhere between juvenile and senile.

Love the cartoons!!

Thanks for your comment, Rae. So that's why you're called Nileyears. I wondered about that. Cute reason for you choosing it. Are you a virgo like I am?

It is confusing but I'm sure now of an age that satisfies them all. I just have to remember to ask because many do not advertise or promote the discounts. Same goes for military.

Sometimes I felt guilty taking my discount because often I see young families at the movies or in restaurants that need it more than I do.

You shouldn't feel guilty. You didn't make the rules that give you the discount. I think it's fair to have a senior discount. Most seniors are on a fixed income and have paid enough over the years. It's earned. Thanks for your comment, Spirit.

Uuummmm, no, lol, I don't think so.....I think I'm a bit old for that! Haven't had a B Day spanking since I was 10......besides you'll have to wait a little over a couple years for the 65 swats, let me get to 63 and 64 first.

Hi Elaine: You have eleven more years to go before you qualify for your Old Age Pension in Canada, so until then you're just middle aged. I was about your age when I joined SFF and there are lots of people here in their 50s and younger so don't worry if someone thinks you're too young to be here.

Interesting, you are the 2nd person that told me 67 is OAS. When they changed the rules, I looked up my birthdate and it showed I'd be eligible 3 months after my 65th birthday. I hope they haven't changed it again.

I'm not losing sleep about being too young here. I like the people and that's all that counts, as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for your comment, bijou.

Hi Elaine, thanks for the chuckle, love the cartoons I agree with what Rocket said.

I agree with her too. If you could ever write me, I would like that. I want to hear more about your life in Ireland. It's on my wish list of places to visit, by the way. I would want to hear from you no matter where you live. Are you on FB? Thanks Maura.

A couple of days ago I got a SFF message from a guy 37! I showed it to Alfie and we both had a chuckle.

37!!! I have grandchildren almost that old.

I was buying concession bus tickets at 60 which applies to students and seniors. At age 60 service charges on bank accounts was discounted. Seniors day every Thursday at Shoppers Drug Mart and you get 20% discount. I don't recall getting any discounts at 55. It might vary from province to province. I don't like the word elderly either. I still get called young lady so that is a plus.

It sounds like I have a few more years before most things kick in. I'm in no rush. Thanks for your comment, Shartaun03.
