CHUTZPAH or CARPE DIEM?

According to Mirriam-Webster's online dictionary, chutzpah means "personal confidence or courage that allows someone to do or say things that may seem shocking to others." Do you or someone you know have chutzpah? What did you say or do that showed you have it?

My first boyfriend used to say "no guts, no glory" and it gave me the confidence to do things I might not have done otherwise. My best example was the Daytime Emmy Awards. I was in NYC and it was at the Waldorf Astoria. I had wanted to buy tickets but they cost $150US and I felt that was too much. When I reconsidered, given how much I wanted it and my family encouraged me, there were no tickets left. I thought I'd at least see the celebrities arrive. I had a question to ask regarding the event and saw the room where the celebrities were seated. The guards were talking and not looking. I seized the opportunity and went in. I got autographs and saw the fans on the balcony who had paid. I have to admit, that felt great. When I left, one guard questioned me. The other guard, the obviously bright one, said he shouldn't bother since I already was in and just leaving.

I think what happened to me was a combination of chutzpah and carpe diem (seize the day). Which do you think it was?

I have both.... where I grew up, 'chutzpah' was having 'guts' or 'courage' and I always had both, which only strengthened me to face situations on my own, although not always easy! I must admit that as I grew more mature, I realized it was really 'confidence' I has all along!

That's good, frenchsalsa. It's funny but I think having chutzpah has gotten a bad , that often is unwarranted. Having confidence is a good thing. Thanks for your comment.

I don't know what I have, maybe some would say I'm crazy, others might call it guts. I get between two people fighting, been doing it since I was a kid, stopping fights. The last one was where I used to work. I was getting ready to leave my job when one of my friends threw his work equipment to the ground and goes nose to nose with one of the trouble makers. My friend Bryan was about to punch out the dude when I stepped between them and said to take it elsewhere, you will lose your jobs. They stopped and walked away. The next day I was called into the office as a witness, someone else reported the incident.

So what is it, crazy, or gutsy?

I can see how both those situations could happen. The latter case is definitely chutzpah, given they are the one that had the product opened. Thanks for your comment, Maisie.

I'd call it brave, Rae. You do have spunk. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for your comment, Liszt. I've actually never had the courage to take empty seats. I always worried that the rightful owner would come to claim their seats and I'd end up looking foolish.

As I said to frenchsalsa, I agree that having chutzpah has undeservedly gotten a bad . I never heard that example about a guy murdering his parents and expecting mercy for becoming an orphan. That brings chutzpah to a higher level.

Yes, it does surprise me that you had difficulty stating your opinion. I'm glad you got past that and I'm not surprised that you did so to help others. It's funny but even though I was shy when I was younger, I did stand up to teachers once or twice, to help friends who weren't assertive enough to stand up for themselves. I agree that there is a difference between being gutsy or being pushy. If there is a lineup and you push in near the front, that's pushy not gutsy. Thanks for your comment, Pat.
