IT'S NEVER TOO LATE! I read an article which included: Rosa Salgado graduated this past weekend from Miami-Dade College in Florida with an associate of arts degree in education, according to CBS Miami. But Salgado isn't your typical college student -- she's 80 years old, and has received her diploma along with two of her grandchildren. The 80-year-old hopes that her story will inspire others to see the importance of education. After reading it, I thought about what it must be like going to school at 80. I went back to university about 10 years after getting my B.Com. I had no trouble fitting in but I was in my 30s. However, I did get my full driver's license at 55. So in my opinion, it really is never too late. What do you think? Have you ever considered going back to school? Have you already done so? Elaine Shuel |

Whatever makes someone happy! If it's going back to school to get that degree a person has always wanted, more power too them. The last time I went to school I was 43, going for business management. I wouldn't do it now, I'm enjoying my retirement for the moment, but you never know, I could change my mind.

I don't think I would like to go back to schoolmate my age. Learning is one thing but the structure of classes has to be really hard at 80. Spiritwoman ^i^

That's true, she does look great. I don't blame you about not going back to school. However, if it was something I really wanted and hadn't completed, I may have done so. Thanks for your response, Rosie. Elaine Shuel

Good luck if you decide to do it, boogie. It sounds like an interesting field of study. Thanks for your comment. Elaine Shuel

That's excellent that you went back to school, after having your family, Lulu. I'm sure that's difficult to do. You brought up some interesting points since your formal education is exceeded by your real world knowledge. That's a tough one to overcome at times. I hope you do end up going back to school, as you indicated you'd like to. Thanks for sharing more about yourself. Elaine Shuel

What a sweet thing to say, Lulu. I really appreciate such kind words. Thank you very much. Elaine Shuel

I agree with Lulu, you do have a way of getting responses from people, have you ever thought of being an investigative reporter?

Sometimes it doesn't have anything to do with what you'll do with it. It's about achieving something you always wanted. I compare it to my driver's license. I don't drive that often. My boyfriend does most of the driving. When I was younger, getting my license would have meant freedom and independence. Now it was more of fulfilling my dream of getting my license. It always bothered me not having it. I think Rosa wanted that degree to know she finally earned it. Thanks for your comment, TxJW2. Elaine Shuel

Well said, MySeek. I agree completely. The more we keep our minds active, the better off we'll be. Elaine Shuel

Thanks Rae, can't say that I have. I wouldn't be great at that job. When someone would say "No comment", I'd be pushing for one.

Ha ha ha, well Elaine, that's when you hog tie them and torture them until they tell you what you want too know! Elaine Shuel

Sounds like some of my stories and a reverse "Fifty Shades of Grey". /:>

Exactly right, akamatt. I agree with you completely. For some it's the satisfaction of achieving what they set out to do. Thanks for your comment. I love looking at houses and have thought about becoming a real estate agent. I probably won't do it but it's a nice thought. Elaine Shuel

Thanks so much for saying that, akamatt. Perhaps one day I'll give it a shot. Elaine Shuel
