MONICA LEWINSKY IS BACK!!! - CYBERBULLYING HAS TO STOP!!!

Even though I'm Canadian and totally not into politics, I know who Monica Lewinsky is. You have to have been hidden under a rock, to not know about her. She has been delivering talks on cyberbullying and she sends a powerful message:

“For nearly two decades now, we have slowly been sowing the seeds of shame and public humiliation in our cultural soil,” Lewinsky said. “Gossip Web sites, paparazzi, reality programming, politics, news outlets and sometimes hackers traffic in shame. Public humiliation as a blood sport has to stop. We need to return to a long-held value of compassion and empathy.”

She also said:

"Sure, the anonymity of the Internet makes it incredibly easy to say whatever you want about virtually anyone. That cloak of anonymity frees you from the responsibility of owning your allegation, providing proof or doing something as simple as coming face-to-face — even electronically — with the person you are sliming."

Monica Lewinsky is right. Cyberbullying is a terrible thing. It can cause irreparable damage. Some have committed suicide from it. I remember reading about Amanda Tood, a young girl that killed herself because of it. It is all too easy to malign someone when you're not help accountable. Sadly, I have to add, there is certainly some cyberbullying to a degree on this site.

Elaine Monica Lewinsky was in Vancouver at the TED conference to talk about her experiences when she was a student intern. I read she got a standing ovation when she spoke. It hasn't been an easy life for her as her past keeps following her. I agree with you that there is some bullying on this site. We have freedom of speech and one should be able to speak freely of what they believe in.

Thank you. Yes, I was referring to her speech at that conference, Shartaun03. I definitely agree that there should be free speech, as long as it's not abused.

I was thinking about what happened between her and Clinton. I still recall the jokes about a woman giving oral to a guy being renamed "giving a Lewinsky". Funny how they didn't make fun of Clinton for having it done in his office. I think the whole thing was blown out of proportion anyhow. After all, Clinton did the same thing that other presidents did, only he got caught.

Hi Elaine: What a coincidence, I was just thinking about the Monica and Bill incident yesterday and how much publicity their affair caused. For all we know Bill and Hillary could have had an agreed upon open marriage where affairs were permissible. And for all we know maybe Bill and Monica had their affair during Bill's lunch hour, so what they did may have been o.k. with Hillary and didn't even involve Bill taking time off his job duties. I mean he couldn't easily take Monica to a hotel to have the affair could he?

I know your blog is about cyber bullying, but I find it very suspicious that just out of the blue, when Hillary may be running for president, Monica decides that now is the time to be doing all these t.v. interviews and making speeches.

That's a good point, bijou. I wonder if that's why Monica is doing all these public appearances now. I hadn't thought of that.

Who knows what goes on behind closed doors and oval office doors? We know the latter but not all the details surrounding it. Thanks for your great comment.

Elaine, what happened to this young woman was horrible, but as long as she puts herself out there in the public profiting financially for her dreaded bad choices, she lends no credibility to any issue she campions. She made a mistake, we get it and empathize, but it's way past time for her to close this one chapter and begin her anew. One bad chapter does not make the whole book bad. She needs to concentrate on a career not launched solely from her name. She should legally change her name, stay out of the public arena, and have a great life. Just my opinion.

Hi Elaine, It's so tragic that so many young and talented people have committed suicide because of cyber bullying. I feel a lot of bullying stems from jealousy and resentment and we've had our fair share of it here in Ireland.

Such a waste of a young life.

Cyberbullying is a huge problem. That has happened to me many times. I have actually been threatened that someone would come to my front door with a weapon. Even on this site I've had to ban people who went after my family because they disagreed with me on an issue. I can't even get some people to refrain from using vulgar language on my blog, even after asking them kindly not to.

I have always felt badly for what Lewinsky had to go through, and it all happened because of the betrayal of her friend, Linda Tripp. The whole episode was awful, embarrassing for so many people. As bad as it was, to spend 70 million dollars to try and sink President Clinton went far beyond where the public wanted it to go.

Lewinsky may have been the first victim, cyberbullying, but it is unbelievable on talk radio...Limbaugh, Hannity and others.
Wow, threatening to come to your house with a weapon, is going way too far. I think the laws have changed to protect people under such circumstances.

I feel they went too far in the Monica/Bill Clinton affair. As I told my friend, if they prosecuted every married guy that cheated, there'd be no room for hardened criminals (pun intended). Thanks for commenting, Leaf.

Welcome to my blog, Samuel. I can see your point of view. She definitely is profiting from the incident that blackened her name. I'm not sure that changing her name, would really change things. Her face is well known and I'm sure investigators could easily find out her new name.

I think she has tried to turn a negative into a positive. By speaking out about cyberbullying, she is taking what happened and making a powerful stand about public humiliation at its highest level. I salute her for that

Thanks for commenting on my blog.

Welcome to my blog, TxJW2. As I just wrote in reply to Samuel's comment, my guess is she wanted to use her "celebrity", to let others know how unacceptable it is to cyberbully someone. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks Pat. It sounds like he remembered all of it.

Bullying used to be in person, as what happened to you. Now, with the internet, when someone wants to bully you, the impact is greater. Amanda Todd was such a case. I read about it and watched the video at the time It was one of the saddest things I ever heard. The poor girl couldn't get away from it. Moving didn't help, nothing helped. She killed herself because of it. The sickest thing is, I read that someone said they're glad she did it. If that's what kids are like today, I'm glad I have none. Hopefully, that's not the norm.

Thanks for your comment, Maura. It is very sad that the despair would be so great that it would lead to suicide. I think they should consider a course at school, teaching children how to learn to ignore it, and making it clear that bullying of any kind won't be tolerated.

I have a great deal of sympathy for her.
I suspect she was just young and naive, and had no idea of the fallout from such an affair.

This is no longer the age when presidents can expect discretion from the media when they get a bit on the side.

Slick Willie was a monk compared to JFK.

Wow this is a strange day, Rentier1. I have agreed with all your comments. The only thing that does bother me about the whole Monica/Bill Clinton affair, is that she kept the stained dress stained. Why didn't she have the dress cleaned?
