AGE DISCRIMINATION - has it happened to you?

Madonna fell while performing at the Brit Awards last month. This is from the article:

Madonna looked shocked - and briefly stopped singing - after she fell down a set of stairs at the BRIT Awards last month. She failed to untie her cape in time for her dancers to rip it away as she took to the stage at London's 02 Arena. Madonna fell during performing at the Brit Awards last month. This is from the article:

Some onlookers praised her at the time for continuing to sing her new song, Living For Love, as proof of her professionalism after more than three decades in the business. But others argued that the embarrassing incident was proof that she should rethink her stage persona.

Mrs Altmann said the media coverage after the fall was typical of the way age is treated. She told MailOnline: 'Much is often made of achievement with a reference to age. 'It's not uncommon to hear that 'despite' someone being a certain age they have achieved something commendable.

'The recent example of ageist comments after Madonna fell off the stage at the Brits encapsulates ageist thinking that is inappropriate.
'Falling was nothing to do with her age and could have happened to any performer of any age.'"

What do you think about what happened? Have you been affected by age discrimination?

Age discrimination is real. I couldn't believe it when it happened to me but it is a huge problem and it has affected many people. All my life I've been very attentive to the ramifications of discrimination and focused, to a fault perhaps, to ensuring fair treatment. There were times I should have been more assertive in the workplace and it would have made my life better. But, I couldn't really make the case in my own mind if being more assertive would advance the cause of my organization, or further my own goals longer term. Most of the time reservation paid off, not always, but most of the time it did. So I was careful when and how I applied authority. I've hired quite a few people in my life and I wasn't an easy interview. What was important to me was making sure the prospective employee understood what kind of thinking I needed. It took time to see through the fog to make that judgment. A fair amount of the time I discovered that first impressions are usually wrong more than they are right. First impressions are not lasting impressions, except in the minds of those with closed minds. It is the closed mind where you see age discrimination, and the narrow capacity to evaluate hidden gems. I encountered this problem when I decided I wanted out of the rat race, trading in a lot of pressure and responsibility for a slower pace, while still delivering productively. I think this was mistaken in the minds of those discriminating in two ways a) a wrongful belief that stepping back would only be temporary until something better came along and b) a wrongful belief that leaving another endeavor came as the result of cause. For me, the discrimination did not cause great harm...I was moving toward retirement anyway and looking for something to do. But the discrimination was both subtle and frankly blatant. This is a real problem out there. It is so bad that I took initiative to discuss the reality with the kids. I wanted to prepare them for such a reality, so they would better grasp how to manage their careers now.

I am still not sure if I made the right decision on retirement. Some of it I like and some of it I don't.
Thanks for sharing your experiences, Leaf. I'm not surprised that retirement has its good points and its bad points. Nothing is perfect. It's the overall benefit that counts.

It's good you were able to brush it off. I think it's wonderful that this site has a wide age range of people that enjoy using modern technology to communicate. I still remember many people who weren't willing or didn't know how to stop the flashing 12:00 on the VCRs.

I agree that anyone can fall on stage. Many performers have. Due to Madonna's age, coincidentally the same age as I am, some are saying she's too old to perform that way on stage.

Elaine I read about Madonna and thought that people were being a little hard on her. She is very fit and looks good for her age. No doubt she was probably wearing those spike heels that celebrity women seem to like. I've seen women stumbling at the Oscars when they are heading up those stairs to receive their Oscar. I myself have never had any discriminatory comments about the age thing. If anything I get lots of compliments that I don't look my age. But guess it is all in the eyes of the beholder

Exactly how I see it, Shartaun03. Women often have issues involving tripping that have nothing to do with their age.

I've had people think I'm in my 30s but as my red hair is fading, I think that is going to change. Oh well.

I meant to add, you don't look your age in that picture I see, Shartaun03.

My health insurance went up once I turned 55 so I know what you mean. Regarding the loan for the house, what a nasty individual to say that to you. I'm very sorry, Bill. Thanks for responding.

I has happened to me.

I was cycling on Commercial Drive in Vancouver, and some 30-something lady in a pickup thought I was going too slowly or impeding her path.

She yelled: Move your axx, grandpa!
