Delete or Not Delete? - THAT is the question

On my last post, someone asked me if I deleted or censored some of the comments that were made. She said she felt some were missing. I was a bit upset by that comment because I knew I hadn't deleted any comments on that post. I wasn't even aware that one could censor a comment. I thought the choices were delete or accept them. I accepted ALL of the comments on that post.

Last night I was thinking about it and thought, why would it matter if I did delete any comments, when that is something that SFF gives a blogger the ability to do? Have I deleted any comments on any of my blog posts? The answer is YES. I am honest enough to say that I did. When the issue about my story being removed happened and I wrote a post about it, there were some that wrote things that were downright nasty or could affect my career. Luckily there were only a few that did that (maybe even only a couple but my memory isn't what it used to be). They hadn't read my story but their attitude could affect my book sales and I won't risk anything related to my career. Other than that, I haven't deleted anything.

Again, censoring is something I wasn't aware of and IF it really is something that could be done, I wouldn't do it. Either I let someone's comments stand or I don't. I won't change anything that's put and it shouldn't be an option to do that, assuming that person was correct.

For the record, I have kept comments that haven't been favorable to myself, including the one that asked if I deleted or censored the comments that were made. Had I been the type to delete anything unfavorable, that comment certainly would have been deleted.

In the case of the woman that deleted my last comments on her post and later banned me: Did she have the right to delete my later messages, when I asked her to tell me why she was upset since I couldn't figure it out? Yes she did. Did she have the right to ban me? Absolutely. We all have the right to do what SFF gives us the right to do here, nothing more and nothing less.

Do you feel that bloggers here should be able to delete comments?

Yes, I think they should be able to delete comments if they wish.

Would I ever delete one. I don't think so. At least I never have. Maybe if it had profanity in it?

I've never blocked any person either.

    Take care Elaine
Thanks for your response, SpunkyLady61. Is your name Suellen? It's great that you've never had to. I hope I never have to again.

Hi Elaine: Lots of times replies to blogs go missing in this group. When confronted, the blogger always claims they didn't delete the reply, but who knows whether they did or not, so it seems pointless to ask the blogger if they deleted it in the first place. I used to blog and only deleted one reply, as the man who replied said something so gruesome and hateful you would not believe. Later I regretted deleting his comment because he was successful in hurting me but no-one else in the group got to read how awful he is.

I'm sorry I thought that too. Thanks for bringing all this to my attention. I had no idea things like auto censoring existed.

I can't speak for others but if confronted, I would tell the truth or tell them it's none of their business. I wouldn't say I didn't delete if I did.

I can understand both ways, regarding what happened to you. On the one hand, it's good to show how miserable some people can be. On the other hand, you don't want such negativity on your blog. I guess it all boils down to what the blogger wants.

Hi Lyn. I definitely see your point and it's certainly worth considering for the future. So far I've kept all comments unless my work was being attacked. I guess if someone became extremely nasty, I'd have to consider deleting their comments. I hope that doesn't happen. The one thing I'm pretty sure is that I wouldn't delete comments just for disagreeing with my way of thinking. I think everyone has a right to their opinion.

You're right, Dan. That is the way I see it, as long as it doesn't get too nasty.

I can't imagine why anyone would criticize the signature phrase I'm seeing. For that matter, you are so sweet that it would be hard to criticize anything you say. That's my opinion from what I've seen of you thus far.

I like Rentier's attitude. He says that he will delete comments that insult any responders to his blog. He would rather they direct their insults to him.

Insults don't usually appear on the few blogs that I post here, but on fb, I sometimes post themes of a more controversial nature. Those whose comments insult other commenters are privately reminded not to do that, and insults are deleted by me.

I've always felt that once someone has to resort to personal insults, that person has lost the argument.

You did the right thing. I'm a Canadian too, by the way. I'll have to check out your profile, the little of it a standard member can see. I live in Ontario.

It would be nice if everyone got along but in reality, that's impossible. Thanks for your input, Rocket.

I knew you were nice, even though I'm new to blogging here it was obvious. What I didn't realize until I just looked at some of your older blog posts, is that you are equally talented. I just saw one of your paintings and was very impressed. You're a handy woman besides. I already knew about your cute dogs. All in all, you're really a well rounded person that I am very pleased to have met, thanks to this site.

My rule is that I regularly delete only comments that attack anyone in SFF but me. I don't want my blogs to become an exchange of insults.
Insulting me in my blogs is just fine. Why should I prohibit people from making fools of themselves?

On occasion I will delete comments that are so far off topic that they are pointless to retain.

And once in a while, on pure whim, I will delete a comment from someone who has blocked me.

I found your response interesting, Rentier1. I didn't think that someone who blocked you, would have the nerve to write on your blog. That doesn't seem right to me.
