Use an accordion, go to jail (my favorite bumper sticker). My sis made the mistake of choosing accordion over piano. Unless there is an overwhelming reason to choose accordion, you might want to think about a keyboard. They come in all sizes, up to 88 keys (like a piano) and can be practiced on with headphones. Despite all my negativity, I think music is one of the best gifts. I'm getting ready to play for a luau here in frozen Klamath Falls, Oregon. (keyboards and sax with some singing).

Hi Gemini: Has your son ever indicated that he would like to learn accordian, because let's face it, accordian music is not for everyone. Keyboard seems a much safer choice for an instrument, and the music will sure sound better.

I used to pay the piano accordion, the Hohner like the one displayed here. However, I would be inclined to ask in the store which one would be best. I would go for CF but would probably be wrong.
