Had your Flu Shot Yet?

Ayzlee McCarthy spent much of Dec. 26 playing with Christmas gifts. Three days later, the feisty 3-year-old was dead, the cause attributed to complications from influenza. "She was healthy. She had a flu shot," said Amber McCarthy, Ayzlee's mother. "The whole thing is so unreal."

Preliminary data show that three Iowa , ages 17 or younger, have died from influenza since October, when the flu season began, said Ann Garvey, deputy state epidemiologist. Garvey could not say whether Ayzlee's death was included in the statistics.

However, Iowa Department of Public Health reports show that for the week ending Dec. 27, 161 Iowans were hospitalized with the flu at a set of hospitals the department monitors. More than half of the patients were 65 or older. The number of people hospitalized with the flu was up from 130 for the week that ended Dec. 20.

Nationally, the flu is now so widespread that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officially consider the outbreak an epidemic, but experts say it's impossible to predict its eventual severity.

Influenza, which usually spikes in winter, is marked by fever, cough, runny nose, chills, fatigue, headache and body aches. Its main symptoms generally do not include vomiting or diarrhea, which some people call the "stomach flu," but which is more likely to be caused by a norovirus or other bugs.
People who get the flu are urged to stay home and rest, avoid contact with other people, drink plenty of water and clear liquids, and treat symptoms with over-the-counter medications

Thank you for this post. This is such a sad post. I am so sorry for the families.

Me? at this point in my life at age 74 the only thing I want from my government is my Social Security which I have earned and doubt that I will get a good portion of it and feel sure I will not live long enough to get all of it.

I would like to post that I want from my government is security (or protection) but from what I see at the moment that is not going to happen either.

I always, always get my flu shot, and also got the pneumonia shot when it came out.

The other important one for those 50 and over is the shingles vaccine. Although it is not 100% effective, if you do happen to get shingles anyway, the resulting long term effects should be lessened.

What a viral strain of flu must be going around there!! Children & seniors are the most vulnerable. How very sad!

I've only had one flu shot in my lifetime. Generally, I do it the natural way with supplementation & diet! But it is so sad to hear of the losses you mention.

Being considered in the high risk category, I've been getting flu shots every year for 10 years. This last one, though, had me laid up in bed for 5 days with what I considered a severe cold and low-grade fever. If I had muscle aches I would have sworn I had the flu. Go figger. And, no, I'm not allergic to eggs or chicken.
