Why???

I just read The Critters Writer's Group. Now...I have always wondered, pronounce Kansas, now pronounce Arkansas. Why?? I think I have been told Arkansas is an Indian word for something, but what is Kansas? If you know the answers let me know, I wonder about lots of things!!! Maybe I have way too much time on my hands.

You know something? I really hate to make this comment. I thought someone of American extraction would have answered the questions by now. But anyway, I'm going to jump in and make an attempt to answer them correctly. /:

Arkansas is a French interpretation of the Sioux word "acansa," meaning "downstream place"

The state of Kansas is named after the Kansas River that flows through it, which in turn derived its name from the Siouan word Kansa meaning "People of the south wind."

Alfie..

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Ann,
I'm with Sassy, I never heard that, very interesting though.
Treasurehunter, I have heard all those used when others are talking about Missouri. Take care Ann, have a nice evening, and God Bless You.
