THE FASCINATING WIELICZKA SALT MINE

The historic Salt Mine in Wieliczka is the only site in the world where mining has continued since the Middle Ages, for about 9 centuries. Done on nine levels, the subterranean reaches the depth of 327 meters and 287 kilometers long below the ground. It hold an astonishing secret, a breath-taking site. The fascinating complex is one of the oldest salt mines in the world , having been running since the 13th century and contains fantastic sculptures, sacred art, mythical figures, carved buildings, dozens of statues, three chapels, an entire cathedral and a museum, all carved out from rock salt by miners. Even the crystals of the chandeliers are made from rock salt that has been dissolved and reconstituted to achieve a clear, glass-like appearance. The site is remarkable but little known outside and referred to as: THE UNDERGROUND SALT CATHEDRAL OF POLAND.

One may feel like being in
The middle of a Jules Verne adventure while descending into the depths of the world.
After a one hundred and fifty meters down the wooden stairs to the Salt mine, the amazing site is seen. The most astounding in terms of its sheer size and Audacity is the Chapel of Saint Kinga.

To cap it all, there is even an underground lake, lit by subdued electricity and candles. This is perhaps where the old Legends of lakes to the underworld and Catholic imagery of the Saints work together to best leave a lasting impression of the Mine. How different a few minutes reflection here must have been to the noise and sweat of everyday working life in the mine.
Wieliczka salt mine has become increasingly a tourist attraction in the first place. Even Some couples choose to have their wedding there. Wieliczka Salt Mine near Krakow in Poland is a World-class attraction listed as the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Below are some some pictures of the underground WIELICZKA Salt Mine. There are lots more as well. Hoping they would please you, Happy viewing.
Lisa.

I was in it in 1985.

The guy leading the tour spotted me as foreigner with hard cash, and pulled me aside to try to sell me a salt crucifix.

Rentier1,

Welcome to my blog, glad reading from you and for your visit too.
You are lucky to have got the chance visiting that place, I haven't done so yet, hope one day I may. In every country people as you stated above, are found, once you're a foreigner everyone would try getting an extra cash, moreover they aren't rich in Poland. It might have been just a replica of a salt crucifix as well, One done outside but anyhow the most important is that you're been able to visit that place. Thanks again.
My regards,
Lisa.
